Chapter 18

Worrying Parents

“Nommi?”

“Yes, Dobi?”

“Do you think Penda is all right?”

“That domee is almost two. If something had happened, we would have been notified. We will hear when there is anything to report.”

“I wonder why Penda hasn’t used the com phone we gave?”

“I don’t know Dobi, there could be many possibilities. Not calling would be one way to prevent security from finding out where our domee is.”

A knock came upon their cabin door. Nommi opened the door to Mike Carone, Operations Manager on the human Mars station.

“Mike? What brings you here?”

Mike pressed his finger to his lips to indicate they were to be quiet.

“I have something that belongs to you. Is this room secure from others?” He asked.

“Could be, but we are not,” Dobi whispered.

“I forgot, here I wrote it down,” he remembered, pressing an envelope toward Dobi. He then left their cabin.

Puzzled, the two ahmans looked at the envelope. With the all-seeing chips in their brains, how could they read this without security finding out?

“Dobi?”

“Yes, Nommi?”

“I need to use the toilet,” the hem replied, beckoning by curling a finger for Dobi to follow.

Without a word, they both entered the tiny closeted room and closed the door.

“Signals can’t go in or out of this room,” Nommi whispered. Cramped couldn’t adequately describe this bathroom. It was made for one use and their cabin listening devices were designed not to penetrate the door to give the occupants rare privacy.

Dobi sat down on top of the commode and Nommi sat on Dobi’s lap. Taking the envelope out of Dobi’s hand, it was opened and they both read the message to themselves.

This is Charlie—I am the cook on board the shuttle heading back to Mars. I’ve got Penda with me and ‘she’s’ OK. Nobody knows yet except an Earth policeman and he’s not telling.

A look of relief washed across both their faces as Nommi folded up the note and shoved it down into a pants pocket. Dobi then hugged Nommi. They then left the confining toilet room.

Mike headed back to Alice’s cabin to let her in on the good news. Her door was open and Frederick was on his leash playing with his new rat toy.

“Hey,” he said, closing the door behind him.

“Hey yourself, what’s up?” Alice asked.

“I just informed the worried parents that Penda is all right.”

“Oh? Where is it?”

“Right now Penda is on its way back to Mars, and no one must know about it. Apparently, the domee has found two friends.”

“That is good news, but how is this going to be explained to the Major?”

“I hope to meet the shuttle before the Major sees Penda.”

“And if he shows up?”

“We’ll just have to play it by ear.”

“I hope that works.” Before she could finish the word ‘works,’ Mike had leaned into her and kissed her.

“Optimism, Alice, optimism,” he replied.
