Chapter Thirteen

Saturday, May 15th.

Hay-Adams Hotel. Downtown D.C.

Mick showered first, then went outside for a smoke. Annie had coffee sent up the room with muffins and bagels to tide them over until they reached the airport.

While waiting for their boarding call, they’d have plenty of time to eat breakfast before the long flight to Russia.

Lukas stepped out of the shower drying his long dark blond hair and he wouldn’t look at Annie. It was always awkward between them when they were alone together since he’d left the ranch and disappeared. Two years had passed and he still owed her an explanation.

“Coffee’s here. I’ll have a quick shower and then we’ll drive to the airport.”

Lukas nodded.

“You sure you want to come with us?” asked Annie. “You can change your mind and go back to the squad in Austin. It’s your call.”

“I’m coming, boss. Never been to Russia, but I don’t like the sound of you going there alone—even with Mick and me, I’m not sure it will be enough.”

Dulles International Airport. D.C.

Annie turned in the rented Cherokee and once they had checked in and had their boarding passes in hand, they sat in a coffee shop and had breakfast.

“You can sleep all the way, Mick,” said Annie. “I heard you tossing and turning in the night.”

Mick nodded and stared blankly into his black coffee.

“What are we gonna do for weapons when we get there?” whispered Lukas.

“I’m sure the CIA will help us out with that,” said Annie. “They must be armed to the teeth.”

“Yeah, they must be,” said Lukas. “I’m a bit nervous leaving Tommy at home. He don’t seem right, and he hasn’t for a while now.”

“He’s not all right,” said Annie. “Far from it. Too many traumas piled one on top of the other. He needs to get back to his normal routine with Lee and the baby and ease up the stress.”

When they boarded the plane, the three of them had Diplomatic status provided by President Parker. That would give them some measure of safety—mainly inside the embassy. Not if they were running around in the dark in the streets of Moscow.

One Observatory Circle. D.C.

Two and I had a quiet breakfast with Linc sitting in his chair on the floor beside me. He hung onto small toys now and stared at them in his chubby little hands.

“I could use some quiet time today to get some work done,” said Lee. “What are you going to do?”

“First thing, I’m putting Linc in his stroller and running on the jogging path. That will be good for both of us.”

“Sure, it will.”

“Later, while he’s napping, I’ll go over to the rowhouse and clean out all the stuff that belongs to me. Yvonne said the rent is paid so the NSA might keep it for a safe house for the next six months.”

Lee nodded. “Makes sense if they’ve already paid for it.” Lee smiled. “I’m so happy you’re off that op, Tommy. I felt your absence while you were away.”

“I hated it too. The only part I liked was singing on the stage.
