Gabriel rubbed his temples, suddenly worn out. Masters and slaves; pain for pleasure… Gabriel envisioned slugging Tara. He felt the grip of his fist entwined in her hair. He cleared his throat, unable to clear his head.

He recalled the hurt behind Ming’s eyes as she watched Tara kiss him while the spaghetti pie congealed in her hands. A headache now pulsed at the top of his scalp. Gabriel closed his eyes, willing the pain away. When he opened them, he saw Jane Doe’s reconstructed head slowly revolve on the table until she faced Gabriel with her vacant stare and toothy smile. Her clay features began melting and blending into the countenance of Andrew Pierce. His doll’s eye winked.

“Gabe?” Dr. B asked concerned.

“Earth to McRay!” Ramirez shouted.

Gabriel took a shaky breath and pulled his eyes away from Jane Doe’s head, which he discovered wasn’t facing him at all.

“Regina wasn’t his prisoner,” Gabriel said finally, forcing the words from his mouth. “She couldn’t have been his prisoner; she spoke to a shelter worker over the summer.”

“That’s true,” Ramirez agreed. “So, that means she knew the suspect.”

Dash shook his head. “But Ross won’t admit he knows Regina. He draws a blank whenever we show him her picture.”

“What about Tara Samuels?” Ramirez asked Gabriel. “Is she giving you anything?”

A sharp slap was heard and they all turned toward Ming. She had slammed shut her briefcase.

Gabriel eyed Ming guardedly. “She claims her assailant is Ross.”

Dr. B sensed some unspoken, secret knowledge pass between Gabriel and Ming.

“It says in your report she smelled him,” Ming piped. “Don’t tell me you’re taking that to the D.A. I’d say she’s not the most reliable witness.”

“Give her a break,” Gabriel responded in a low voice. “Mrs. Samuels has been through a horrible ordeal.”

“Smells don’t hold up in court, Gabriel. You should know that.” Ming sneered at him. “Or perhaps you’re still confused. Would you all excuse me?”

Ming scraped her chair away from the table and made for the exit.

Watching her abrupt departure, Ramirez called out after her, “Come back when you’ve pulled that giant bug out of your ass!”

Dr. B looked at Gabriel who was staring at the opposite wall with a flat expression.
