The alarm on her phone was loud enough that she nearly jumped out of her skin at three a.m. Morgan sat up, dropping her feet to the floor, rubbing her eyes. She silenced the alarm and took a deep breath in, checking her phone. She blinked a couple of times, her eyes blurry from the interrupted sleep. There was only a single text from Duncan on her phone. It had come in about thirty minutes before. âNothing from Bill. Iâll try again in an hour. Let me know how your meeting goes.â
âWill do,â she wrote back. She knew if she didnât respond, Duncan wouldnât hesitate to arrive on her doorstep.
Getting up and stretching her arms overhead, she tried to shake off how tired she was. Walking to the back door, she let Bo out while she went to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She didnât bother changing her clothes. There would be time to get cleaned up after her meeting with Oliver.
Just as she was feeding the belt through the loops on her jeans, Morgan heard Bo at the door again. She let him in, buckling the belt and holster around her waist. She checked her pistol once more to make sure it was ready to go. Holstering it, she stuffed another full magazine of ammo in her pocket, picked up her keys and phone, and walked to the back door. It was time to go meet Oliver.
Driving to the park, Morgan left the windows in her truck down, the cool night breeze filtering through the windows. She sucked in a couple of deep breaths, trying to wake up as best she could in the early hour. Her mind started to focus on what was at hand. She was headed to a strange park to meet a man sheâd never met to talk about another man sheâd only met a few hours before. She shook her head, realizing her palms were sweating, her thoughts racing. What had Duncan gotten her into?
Pulling into the park, Morgan felt a lump form in her throat, tension coursing down her back and into her legs. Any sluggishness she had from getting up so early dissipated. The clouds that covered the sky a few hours before while she and Duncan were searching for Bill had broken up, leaving the slight glow of moonlight over East Lake Park. There were no other cars in the parking lot. Morgan checked the time on her dashboard. She still had twenty minutes before they were supposed to meet. She pulled the truck into one of the parking spots and waited, keeping an eye on the mirrors around her, watching for movement. She pulled her gun out of the holster, resting it on her thigh. The hair on the back of her neck stood up. Would Oliver be on time? Would he even show up? At this point, she had more questions than answers.
Two minutes later, her phone buzzed. âAre you driving a truck?â
Morgan stared at the screen. It had to be Oliver.
