“Eric, a constituent is on the line,” a staffer announced on the intercom. “Wants to talk about a donation. Can you take it?”

“Sure.”

“Line 2.”

He pushed the button and picked up the handset. “This is Eric Wallace.”

“Nikolay, it’s Anna.”

He almost dropped the phone. Anna! “Call me right back on my cell phone.” He gave her the number.

A few seconds later, his cellphone rang.

“Anna?”

“Yes.”

“How . . . how did you find me?”

“I saw you on TV yesterday.”

The day before, he’d introduced Senator Savage at a press conference concerning the issue of school safety in the wake of the Parkland massacre.

“Where are you?”

“East Stroudsburg.”

So close! “Are you teaching there?”

“Yes, but at the college level now. East Stroudsburg State.” She laughed. “Dealing with little kids all the time got old. You’re in politics now?”

“Behind the scenes only.”

“Are you . . . are you married?”

“Oh, Anna. I tried to find you, but I didn’t have your name, obviously. What is it, by the way?”

“Elizabeth Hancock.”

“Are you married?”

“No. I kept hoping . . . Anyway, how are you doing?”

“I want to see you.”

“Do you think that’s a good idea? Your wife . . .”

“I want to see you, Anna.”

“Here?”

“That would be best.”

“I’m having exams this week, but next week I don’t have classes.”

“I can come up Monday. Give me your address.”
