Chapter 21

Once we enter her bedroom, Vivian lets go of my hand and goes to one side of the bed, gesturing to the other.

“I can sleep on your couch,” I say. “I’ll just take a pillow and blanket, and I’ll be good.”

“No you won’t.” She’s starting to undress. “It’s a very lumpy couch. I’ve been meaning to get a decent bed for what I call my guest bedroom, but I keep failing.” She smiles at me. “Most of the boys don’t mind.”

“Look, I don’t think we are—”

“Relax, Roger. We can share the same bed without exchanging bodily fluids. It’s possible.”

By now she’s down to her underwear and bra. She goes to her dresser and takes out a long T-shirt which she throws over her head and pulls down below her waist. In another second, with a reach behind her back, her bra comes off. Then she stands there with fisted hands on her hips, and the implied question: what I’m waiting for.

“I should take a shower,” I say.

“Sure.” She waves at the door leading into her master bathroom. “There should be lots of towels there.”

I go into the bathroom, close the door and undress, but not before I take out the two packs of one hundred dollar bills and conceal them underneath the sink, behind three rolls of toilet paper. I jump in the shower, and the water hasn’t run for two minutes when she comes into the bathroom.

“Here are some pajama shorts and a T-shirt. I think they’ll fit you.” She sets the clothing on the sink counter, washes her face and goes back to the bedroom. “Drop your clothes on the floor. We’ll do a quick load of laundry in the morning.”

I let the water run over me, somehow hoping that it will wash away all that’s transpired over the last few days. Only the blood and the sweat come off. By the time I return to the bedroom, dressed in an extra-large Dodgers T-shirt and the shorts she left for me, she’s breathing heavily, fast asleep.

I get into bed gingerly to avoid waking her. She stirs nonetheless and snuggles next to me. I’m about to protest her advance when I realize she’s still asleep. I lay there, hearing her, feeling the warmth of her breath brushing against my right shoulder. At first I can’t go to sleep, but in the end, my body gives in to my exhaustion and the rhythm of her breathing.
