“You were too forceful, too adamant that he was responsible.”

“Bollocks. It was perfect, and I’ll tell you why it was perfect: because that’s exactly how I would react even if I didn’t already have that bastard in the back of my van.”

Chapter 29

THERE WAS A CERTAIN tension in the air this morning, and it had nothing to do with Eddie’s near miss with Beelzebub again. Sid could sense it, how Eddie brooded over his coffee, hunched there like a madman, overly protective of the biscuits on the plate next to him.

“You okay?” Sid smiled at him.

Eddie looked up, nodded, and looked back down again.

“You don’t sound your usual spangly self. What’s bothering you?”

He sighed, and peered up at Sid. “It’s time for Skid’s meeting, to sign him off on the probationer thingy.”

“It’s the end of his probation period?”

“That’s what I said, isn’t it?”

“But why so grumpy?”

At that moment the door opened, and a young lady strode in with confidence on her face and a smile to go with it. “Hi, Eddie.”

“Penny!” Sid shouted and leapt from his chair. “How are you? Not seen you in ages. Can I get you a nice cup of tea, and,” he whispered, “we have some delicious Hobnobs.”

Eddie groaned.

“Oh my, I love the hair! I brought some brandysnaps.”

“Thank you, it’s genuine Ferrari red. I’ll put the kettle on.”

Penny stopped by the desk Eddie was hunched over. “Passed quickly, hasn’t it?”

“What has?”

“Six months. Since Mark started with you.”

“We need to talk.”
