Chapter Twenty-Four

Jeff had flown to Washington and was waiting outside Manning’s office for their meeting. He had images of an insistent Manning demanding to know where Luke was and what he was doing. He would think of some excuse for not revealing anything about Luke’s whereabouts or activities, not that he really knew much himself.

As he waited, Paul Haver came walking down the hall. Jeff had met him a couple of times but did not even know what his position with the CIA was. He only knew what Dan told him.

“Good afternoon, Jeffrey. I don’t know if you remember me, but we’ve met a couple of times. Paul Haver.” He held out his hand, glancing up and down the hall to see if anyone was watching them. “What time is your meeting with Manning?”

“How’d you know I had a meeting with Manning?” Jeff asked.

“A friend of yours told me,” Paul replied.

“Who?”

“I’ll tell you later. Do you have time to visit with me for a little while?”

Jeff looked at his watch, then looked at Paul. “The meeting isn’t scheduled until two, so I’ve got about twenty minutes. I arrived early, so I just thought I’d wait here until Manning got back. His secretary told me he’d be back at two.”

“Good. Come with me.”

The two men went up the stairs to an office that was fairly small and equipped with only a desk and three chairs. They were vigilant in making sure no one saw them go into the room together. Paul locked the door behind them and pulled two of the chairs close enough together to enable them to speak in whispers.

“Archangel called me!” Paul said softly. “He said you are his trusted friend and asked that I fill you in on his progress.”

Jeff did not say a word, just stared at Paul, who related the entire conversation with Archangel, including Luke’s urgent appeal that they find out who the American member of TOPTR was. He went on to say that Agent Archangel was going to send them a copy of an audiotape with the American man’s voice on it.

Jeff interrupted asking, “So, he said he was going to Turkey?”

“Yes. He’s going after the storage units that TOPTR is using to accumulate weapons and explosives for the terrorists.”

“Good God, man. Is anyone going to help him?”

“I don’t think he can use help without someone finding out who shouldn’t know about this. If he doesn’t contact me by a certain date and time, I’m to start a full investigation. He seemed pretty damned determined.”

“Yeah, that would be Archangel all right. Damn him. I wish he didn’t feel like he has to do this by himself. I never should have agreed to him going to Europe in the first place.”

Jeff blamed himself for the whole thing.

“If he hadn’t gone,” Paul said, “we might have a bigger problem then we have right now. Somehow he’s been able to breach their secrecy and their security as well, since he taped their entire private meeting. Listen, Jeff.
