CHAPTER FIFTEEN

As Diana headed down the street toward Titania’s address—at least, she thought she was heading toward the address, but it was impossible to tell without GPS—her phone buzzed with a call from Lily.

“Mom! Where are you?” Lily asked when she answered.

Diana cradled the flip phone between her shoulder and her ear as she turned the map Luca had drawn in her hands. Nothing looked like the gridwork of streets around her. She needed a compass. A guardian angel. Something. “I’m fine. I—”

“You disappeared and we haven’t seen you. Gaia said you left even before breakfast! We were worried about you. Are you all right?”

“I’m sorry, darling. I thought—” Diana stopped walking, confused. Then it suddenly made sense. She’d only told Bea of her plans to be busy in the morning. “Is Bea still sleeping?”

Lily paused. “Yes. She said it was jet lag, but I don’t buy it. She’s the worst in the mornings. Like the wicked witch. She actually threw a shoe at me when I went into her room to wake her. What is she, like, still twelve?”

“Oh. Well, she was probably the last person I should’ve counted on to relay the message. But I told her that I had some things to do this morning.”

“Some things to do? Like what?”

“Just errands. You know. Annoying things you wouldn’t be interested in,” she fudged, since she really couldn’t think of any errand that made sense. “But I told Bea I thought we could go sightseeing later.”

Lily sighed. “Later? What about now? Dad’s freaking out about you.”

Diana’s eyes went wide. “He is? Well, it’s not like he’s my warden or—”

“Yes, but I am, too. After what happened at that theater, with that actor being murdered? That’s really creepy. You really shouldn’t be alone with some murderer running around town. You never know what could happen.”

Uh-oh. Lily had been talking to her father. When the two of them got together, they let their minds wander to crazy scenarios. In Lily’s world, just about everyone was a possible axe murderer. “Oh, honey, but I’m absolutely in no danger whatso—”

“And Dad said that the next time that detective tries anything with you, he’s going to call his lawyer. That’s no way to treat an American.”

Diana scoffed. So he still felt he needed to watch over her, even though he’d been the one to officially end their marriage? Like she was some incompetent child that would fall apart without his assistance. She couldn’t keep the bitterness out of her voice. “Oh. Like I said. I’m fine. I was fine. And I’ll be fine, with or without him!”

There was a pause. In that pause, Diana could sense that Lily didn’t believe her. “We were going to town to have lunch at the Shakespeare Festival. Why don’t you meet us?”

Diana looked up at a street sign. She’d expected it to be Via Camillo, but it wasn’t. It was Via Barone. Great. What was north, and what was south? The sun was high in the sky, so that wasn’t helping.
