Chapter Twelve

My pulse racing and my vision red with fury, I made my way off the bridge and pulled onto the first side street I came to. Parked beneath a streetlamp that was just humming to life, I was hidden from anyone seeing me beating my fists against the steering wheel. I screamed a stream of obscenity-laced threats at the sky, promises to the Almighty of Bauer’s bloody fate. I dared Him to try and stop me.

“Bauer has Wickowski,” I breathed into the phone the second Mole picked up.

There was a lot of commotion, and I envisioned him shooting out of whatever seat he was occupying. I heard the clatter of fingers furiously working over a keyboard. I imagined him bringing up a series of thumbnails, views from the various cameras he had stationed around the property. “Okay, good.” He breathed in relief. “There’ve been no triggers. Yet.”

That caught my attention. “Yet?”

Mole’s timbre was solemn as he measured his words. “They’ve got Wickowski. I don’t mean to sound like a dick, but Bauer did warn you to back off, which was the exact opposite of what you did. Who do you think is going to be next? Oh yeah—that’d be you. Or me!” Mole paused for so long, I thought I’d lost him. Finally, “I suggest it’s not too late to just…back off.” There was a heavy sigh, one burdened with what he wouldn’t say to me. What he couldn’t say to me, because I wouldn’t be able to hear him.

“You want me to bow out and let Bauer go,” I stated, not asked.

“What I want is irrelevant, Sammy. I love you, but you’re always going to do what Sammy needs to do first.” My feelings might have been a little raw in that moment, but I really thought I sensed disapproval in Mole’s voice and that, itself, stung.

“I can fix this, Mole. I can get Wickowski back and still destroy Bauer.”

“Can you? And can you do that while keeping us both safe? And Quinn?” he challenged.

“Yes,” I said defiantly. “Will you help me?”

I tried not to read into the space between my question and Mole’s answer, which wasn’t direct. “You need to get that computer to me without actually coming here. So far, there’re no hostiles in sight. But that doesn’t mean the building and surroundings aren’t being surveilled, waiting for your inevitable return. Your deputy friend taped his business card to the gate outside. You should probably give him a call.”

Quinn. I’d totally put him out of my mind since we’d parted. He must have raced back to Oregon instead of chasing me down. Smart move. Maybe there was hope for him yet.

Too many thoughts were swirling in my head. I needed to slow them, examine each of them one at a time, and I would do just that—once I got Wickowski back. I’d get myself sorted with Quinn, I’d formulate a plan to not only get Bauer but also find a way to dismantle the Fraternity. Somewhere in there, justice might be served for the Lannisters.
