Inspector Jennings left the almoner in little doubt of what he thought of his security arrangements. ‘Anyone could walk in here, pretending to be one of those Guards officers, and walk out with enough weaponry to take on half a dozen of my bobbies.’

‘As I understand it, your bobbies have been demanding for some time that they be armed with something better than billy clubs,’ the almoner replied coldly, ‘so perhaps you might want to raise the matter with your police commissioner. As for my security arrangements, they’re normally sufficient for personal adornments such as fob watches, hats, walking sticks and the occasional set of artificial teeth. Since we rarely get swords and pistols, we took extreme care over those items when they were dumped in here, without, I might add, any attempt to indicate who they belonged to. But I was able to obtain, from someone at the Tower, a reliable list of what each of the officers would have been issued with and wearing at the time of the explosion. And if you consult my record here, you’ll see that two of the officers have already been discharged with what they were entitled to. I cannot, of course, guarantee that they each got back the very items that they came in with, but at least they didn’t walk out of her with something to which they were not entitled.’

Jennings had been studying the record book while the almoner had been prattling on, and he made a note in his own notebook that Captain John Sweeney had been the first to be discharged, followed by Captain Gerard Logan a few days later. Each had received a bayonet and sword, but nothing else.

Thanking him coldly for his assistance, Jennings made a short trip down to the mortuary to receive confirmation that the latest victim had died in the same way as the others. Then, after visiting the Tower Ward in order to speak with Doris Mooney, he headed back to Scotland Yard for a meeting with the Irish Branch in the hope that they could provide him with some light down the long dark tunnel that this investigation had become.
