Chapter Thirty

The Fly burst through the double doors to the loading dock just as a nondescript, faded gray cargo van backed into an open space. A bearded young man, whom she now knew as Roach, jumped out of the driver’s side and tried to open the back doors of the van. The edge of the dock came up a third of the way above the floor of the van and blocked the doors from opening.

“I’ll have to pull the van up,” the youth said.

“Hurry,” The Fly said.

An announcement blared over the hospital loudspeakers. “Code Orange, Code Orange. The hospital is on lockdown. All personnel remain in place. Repeat. The hospital is on lockdown. All personnel remain in place until further notice.”

Roach pulled the van forward. The Fly jumped off the dock, yanked open the rear door, and rolled into the van’s cargo area. She yelled at the driver. “Ándale. Ándale. Get us the hell out of here.”

She reached back and closed the rear door just as the youth slammed his foot on the accelerator. The van lurched from the space, throwing The Fly backwards against the door she’d just shut. She got herself up and crawled toward the front passenger seat. She made a sudden stop when she saw her small duffel bag stored behind the driver’s seat. Someone else already sat in the passenger seat.

El Fuego looked back and gave her a wicked smile. “Well done, my little fly.”

The van sped around a corner. The centrifugal force threw The Fly against the sidewall.

“Hold on,” El Fuego said to her in Spanish. “We are in a hurry.”

The Fly grabbed onto the side door handle, righted herself, and sat with her back against the door.

Sirens approached from the distance, growing louder by the second. Roach pulled the van to the curb and stopped until the speeding police vehicles passed them and headed toward the hospital.

The Fly had completed her mission and escaped detection. But now what? And where was Diego, her accomplice from the hospital? He, too, should have come to the loading dock for extraction.

As the van started moving again, she glared at El Fuego. “Why is my stuff in the van?”

He cast her a wicked smile. “You’re not going back to the hotel.”

“What? Where?”

“You will see.”

“I’m sure as hell not going anywhere with you.” She eyed her purse on the floor where it had skidded after she boarded the van. Could she get to the Smith and Wesson before El Fuego could react?

El Fuego turned around and raised his hand over the seat back. The Fly stared at the barrel of a pistol identical to hers, pointed at her forehead.

He spat out the words. “You are not in charge here, chingada. You never were. Now hand me that purse, then sit your ass down and shut up.”

Her eyes afire, The Fly stared him down.

El Fuego brandished the pistol.

This pendejo is stupid enough to shoot me. She did as told.

He removed her pistol from the purse, emptied the other contents onto the floor of the van, then tore open the lining.
