The reading room appeared more vacant than I remembered. Desks with dividers had been pushed aside, creating an open space in the center, while the desks themselves formed a barricade at the door. Though the door was a flimsy wooden slab like the others in the dormitory, the heavy desks provided a sturdy barrier.

"Here."

I distributed the cup ramen, filled with hot water from the dispenser. Each person gratefully accepted a serving.

"You saved us. We thought we would starve to death here."

Like us, they had been unable to have proper meals. Each individual received the food with tearful gratitude. Some couldn't wait for the noodles to cook and eagerly stirred the instant meal.
