Lia

“Let’s get this over and done with,” I say, my voice filled with resignation, as I sink into the car seat. Rafe pulls away from the side, maneuvering through the chaotic Gold Coast streets, taking us closer to the hotel.

Rafe waggles his eyebrows, saying, “You can’t wait for tonight.”

I laugh out loud at his one track mind. “You mean sleeping between two gorgeous guys... or being the third wheel in a beautiful relationship?” I reply.

“Our relationship is perfect. You make it beautiful,” Rafe says, and my heart beats wildly listening to him. His sweet and kind nature contrasts with his Mafia family background, making it difficult to believe him. “Is it weird looking at me and seeing your husband?” he asks. There’s a hint of inquisitiveness in the way he speaks.

“It was at first. But I can see the differences. Your personalities are definitely different. So not anymore.”

He smiles. “He’s a good man. And once you find out who he really is, you’ll love him for it. He’s clouded with hate for our father at the moment. But…” He sighs. “I’m asking you not to write him off.”

I glance out of the car window. The day is bright, with a perfect pale blue sky and hardly a cloud to stop the warmth. As we speed down the road with the top down, the wind rushes through the car, creating a whirlwind of hair around me.

“I’ll try not to,” I assure him.

“Will you?” he asks.

“I know that me being with Dante or not affects you and Cade,” I respond.

“It does, but this isn’t about me and Cade. We found a way before. You being with Dante, having his...” he trails off.

Swiftly, I twist around to face him, my eyes narrowing with determination. “Keep talking.”

He swallows. “Fuck...”

I wait anxiously for Rafe to reveal the truth that I’m already aware of. This is the perfect time for him to earn my trust if he wants it.

“My father has Xander’s vote. I promised Dante mine...” He hesitates, glancing at me. “Once Dante is married and his wife has his baby. He gets the baby’s vote.”

I chew on my bottom lip as I contemplate everything I already knew. “And how does this affect you?”

“I love Cade, but it’s not the Mafia way. We’ve kept our relationship hidden for years. Now we refuse to, but he’s never invited to anything—my father’s wedding, your sister and Xander’s birthday. Do you know how that feels for the person I love to be ostracized?” Rafe confesses.

I reach out, my fingers grazing his hand gently. “I’ll do everything I can for you and Cade, and he will come to the party.”

“Regardless of what I’ve told you, we really want you too, Lia. We’ve spoken about it. Cade and I want you. The initiation was only supposed to be one night. You were supposed to be ours in name only.”

I exhale loudly. “You like to rock the boat, Rafe. First with Cade and now with your stepsister,” I say, my voice warm.
