Chapter 18

Callie had been anxiously waiting all morning to hear from Parton or Billy about how the autopsy was going, even though she knew she was being irrational. They wouldn’t have any news, not yet. Even once the autopsy had been completed, it would only be after analysis of blood samples taken during the examination that anyone would be able to say whether levels of potassium or chloride were raised. Whilst labs might be able to give a result in an hour if needed for a live patient whose life might depend on it, that rush just wouldn’t happen for a dead one. But that didn’t prevent her from hoping they would.

She also knew that the need to maintain the chain of evidence would slow things down even more. It might be days before the results were known and even longer before there was an official report, so there was no point worrying about it. The pathologist wouldn’t want to be rushed into saying anything before he was sure. Except that Callie couldn’t stop herself worrying as she sat in the doctor’s office, watching the rain run down the window. She had driven to work that morning because the rain had been heavy enough to make her usual walk completely unfeasible, and it hadn’t stopped all morning. It was typical British seaside summer weather.

“Hiya!” Eleanor said as she came into the room, almost dropping the pile of paperwork in her arms.

“Good morning?” Callie asked the trainee.

“Not too bad,” she replied and sat at the computer station next to Callie. “How about yours?”

“Okay, I think.” Callie couldn’t remember much about her morning; try as she did to concentrate, she was well aware that she had drifted through the session on automatic pilot as she worried about the PM and what it might reveal. She just hoped she hadn’t missed something important with any of her patients.

They both worked in silence for a while, although Callie was not getting a great deal done and was continually distracted by the rain outside and her own thoughts.

“Is everything okay?” Eleanor asked after a while. “Only, you seem a bit distracted.”

“It’s just all the waiting, for the results of the post-mortem.” Callie shoved the remaining paperwork back into her basket. “Maybe I’ll be able to concentrate better this afternoon. I need a walk to clear my head.”

“What post-mortem?” Eleanor asked.

“On the old man that died yesterday. We think it might be another one.”

“Another what?”

“Murder?”

“No!” Eleanor seemed shocked. “Another one all ready for a holiday? Suitcase all packed and everything?”

“Possibly,” Callie admitted. “The case wasn’t out ready, we found it in the cupboard, but it was packed.”

“So his death might not be the same?”

“Maybe, maybe not,” Callie said.

And that was the problem. She had been so sure this was another one, but what if it wasn’t? She kept going over the similarities and the differences between them. The first two – or three if you counted Mrs Dingwell, which she shouldn’t because she really was going away on holiday with her niece – occurred on a Tuesday.
