Chapter 8: Dungeons and Dragons
âPut on a jacket, honey. Itâs quite chilly outside.â
Josh clenched his jaws and tried to shake Jettâs hand off his shoulder. Jett slid it down Joshâs back as he reached for Joshâs jacket and held it out for him.
Bobby squinted at the clothes hooks in the hall before he turned to watch Josh, a frown deepening on his forehead as he did. Josh didnât know why he was frowning, or why he was looking at Josh is if to decide whether he was a total lunatic or someone to be pitied. Maybe he imagined it, but something feral glinted in Bobbyâs eyes before they settled on the same collected expression as before. It didnât matter. Soon, Bobby would see.
Josh clenched his unhurt hand and took a step towards the front door. It was too crowded in the hall with three grown men standing around, and he couldnât wait to prove he wasnât crazy. Iâm not crazy!
He stomped down the stairs and waited for the others to follow.
âWhen did you say Josh had the accident?â
âOh, right after we had been to Andorra to fetch Sam, so five years ago.â Jett shook his head and let out a sad sigh. âIâm just glad it happened after. If it had happened before, we probably wouldnât have been cleared for custody of Sam, and Josh is an amazing father when he doesnât have his seizures. Iâm glad he got the opportunity to become one.â Bobby frowned again, but Jett appeared oblivious. âDo you have children, Officer?â
âErmâ¦no.â
âOh, you should. Thereâs no greater joy.â
âIf you say so.â Bobby took a step closer to Josh. âLead the way.â He nodded to the back of the house.
âOkay.â Josh took a deep breath to start to explain what heâd seen but choked on the words as the red iron door came into view.
It was open.
The part of the double door Jett had welded shut stood rested against the side of the cellar, leaving a gaping hole open for anyone to enter. Josh stumbled; goose pimples spread over his arms.
âIâm afraid Josh cut off the hinges of the door yesterday so itâs impossible to close now.â Jett walked up to take the lead.
Josh hesitated. Surely, Jett couldnât haveâ¦
âThis way, Officer. Let me turn on the lights.â Jett slipped into the darkness; the humming sound from the light bulbs followed shortly after. âFeel free to look around.â
Bobby went inside without a word.
âPerhaps you should, too, honey.â
The ground swayed under Joshâs feet. He had to swallow several times to hinder the blueberry muffin heâd eaten from coming back up.
A shiver he was unable to contain shot through him as he put first one then the other foot on the root cellar floor. The air was stale and crisp, but something about it was different. It smelledânot clean perhaps, but not like a tomb, either. The wasps were goneâthe floor had been swept. There were no bunks, no bodies. The filing cabinet was gone, as was the scale, but the red locker was still there.
