Chapter 22

Chase waited until they were back in the car before taking out her cell phone. She inspected the device for several minutes. Satisfied that it hadn’t been tampered with, she called Linus.

“Hey, Chase, how’s it going?”

“Fine.” Chase recalled her previous conversation with the man and added, “Good.” She stopped just short of asking Linus how he was doing. She’d never been one for small talk. “Any update on the warrant?”

“Not yet. I made your concerns known to Director Hampton, and he said he was on it.”

“Thanks. Did you find out anything about the Path to Eden?”

“A little, but as I warned you, they don’t have much of an online footprint. Doesn’t jive with their philosophy, you know?”

Chase pictured the vast farmland and the busy hands. No, it surely didn’t.

“All right, I’m going to put you on speaker. Tell us what you’ve got.”

“Well, according to their tax filings, the Path to Eden has one-hundred and fifteen registered members. They report only paltry earnings, but you know how these things are. It’s not a good look for the IRS to be digging into these supposed peace cults when Amazon doesn’t pay a single dollar in taxes. Aaaaanyway, the man in charge is Elijah Kane, but you already knew that. Forty-two years old, born to Ellery and Edna Kane. Only child. Up until about ten years ago, the entire Kane clan were big supporters of the Latter-Day Saints—I have several tax receipts from surprisingly large donations. I also found an archived LinkedIn profile for Elijah. He did his undergrad at Montana State University and got a Master’s in communication from the University of Montana.”

This made sense. Even during the short period she had interacted with Elijah, his proficiency in conveying his thoughts and beliefs was unmistakable.

“You said he’s an only child?” Tate asked.

“That is correct.”

“Trent Bain claims that he is Elijah’s half-brother,” Chase said.

There was a short pause.

“Trent Bain? The guy from the MBI you’re working with?”

“Yeah—can you check into that, Linus?” Chase asked.

“Will do.”

Chase waited for a beat and ran the conversation she’d had with Elijah Kane back.

“I need everything you can find on Dylan Lynn Cott, too.”

“That’s all I have to go on? A name?”

“I bet he’s got a criminal record. He’s probably young. Maybe not even in his twenties yet.”

“Okay, give me a second.” Chase heard Linus start typing and muted their end of the call.

“What do you think? I asked that question about kids and Elijah got this look in his eyes.”

“I saw it,” Tate confirmed. “He was quick to bring up, Dylan.”

“Maybe too quick. Could be that we caught him off guard and even though he was thinking about the kids in the truck, Elijah used this Dylan story to cover his emotions?”

Tate didn’t bite.

“It’s a stretch, Chase.”

“What is your general opinion the man?” she asked.

“I mean, to be honest? He’s precisely who I thought he would be.”

“Yeah, my thoughts exactly.”

“Okay, got it,” Linus cut in, and Chase took the phone off mute. “Dylan was 14 years old when he was picked up by the authorities.
