Girl, Interrupted
- Nat -
Nat and Walt had gotten a request for a wellness check around five AM, and after determining that Ms. Provost was indeed still alive and well â just without her hearing aids â they were back in the rig, waiting for their next call.
Walt pulled the truck over, âIâm fucking starving, do you want anything?â
âFrom in there?â Nat asked dubiously.
He looked into the bodega, âYeah, they make a really good Indian breakfast.â
Nat stared at him in disbelief, âYou eat Indian food for breakfast?â
âYeah,â he paused, raising an eyebrow, âSo do about one billion other people â you know, in India.â
Nat rolled her eyes, âSure man, Iâll try it. Can you also pick up some antacids? I have a feeling Iâll be needing them.â
Walt let out a hoot of laughter and popped out of the truck. While Nat watched him go into the front door, her cell phone buzzed twice, letting her know that she had an incoming call. She pulled out her phone and her caller ID indicated that it was Carrie.
Odd time.
âHey baby,â she said, answering the phone.
âNat! You need to get your ass over here right now! Someone just threw a rock through my window, and I think itâs probably Tori.â Nat pulled the phone away from her face, and looked at the phone with a âwhat the fuckâ expression on her face.
âUhh, Iâm sorry. What?â
âJesus fucking Christ. I know sheâs your best friend. But Iâm telling you, it was her. I saw a car that looked just like hers drive off.â
âHoney, calm down. I highly doubt that Tori threw a fucking rock through your window. Just take a deep breath and tell me what happened.â
âDonât fucking tell me to calm down. You come over here after work, and weâll discuss what youâre going to do about this Tori situation.â Nat heard her take a deep breath and then, âI mean, Christ, you have no idea what your friend and I talked about last night while you were off in the bathroom. She was acting all crazy. It was her, I know it.â
Nat pulled the phone away from her face again, looked up towards the roof of the car, and let out a silent oath. âYeah, okay, of course. Iâll be off around noon. Are you going to be home?â
âIâll make sure that Iâm available. Iâm not working today anyway â those two fags that hired me donât have me on the schedule until next week.â
Nat bunched her brows together â disliking her derogatory language â but chose not to address it. âYeah? Alright, Iâll see you around then. Of course, you know, if thereâs an emergency I could get held up.â
She heard Carrie let out an exasperated sigh, âIâve figured out by now how your schedule works.â
âOh good. Okay, Iâll see you then.â
âYeah. Bye.â
The phone made a triple beeping sound indicating that the call had disconnected on the other side.
She didnât even wait for me to say goodbye â she is fucking pissed.
