FIFTEEN

William runs to the car and grabs the gun from the dashboard.

He runs back to Dennis, stops and takes aim at the old guy in the wheelchair as he comes rolling closer.

“Thank you …” he calls out, his voice weak.

“Don’t mention it,” William calls back. “Thank us by stopping right there, why don’t you?”

The old guy doesn’t heed the warning, he just keeps on rolling towards them, squinting against the headlights. William can tell he’s unarmed. He looks worn and tired and hungry.

“I’m grateful you guys came around,” the man says, finally stopping his wheelchair in the middle of the road. “I was sure my days were numbered. Well, they still are, but at least they don’t have to end with me being eaten alive. You don’t happen to have a cigarette on you, do you?”

William glances at Dennis, who isn’t moving or saying anything. “I know you have a gun,” he tells the old guy.

“I do, but I ran out of bullets hours ago,” the old guy says, coughing. “My nephew spent the last on trying to shoot his way out of the mess he’d gotten us into. Unfortunately, the dead just kept on coming, and eventually, they got him.”

William doesn’t lower the gun. He’s sure the guy is bullshitting them. After all, he shot Birgit in cold blood just hours ago.

“Why did you leave the house?” the man asks. “If you don’t mind me asking? Seemed to me like the ideal spot to be right now.”

“We have to try and stop this thing,” William hears himself say. “We’re headed for the coast. It’s a long story. And we’re in a hurry, so you’ll have to excuse us.”

“By all means,” the old guy says, holding up his hands. “Don’t let me slow you down.”

“Dennis?” William asks. “How are you holding up?”

Dennis blinks and turns his head to look at William. He’s pale, but his eyes are surprisingly calm. “I’m fine.”

“What do you want to do here?” William lowers his voice, yet he suspects the old guy can still hear him, as the evening is eerily quiet.

“I want to keep moving,” Dennis says.

“So you don’t … feel like getting even with this guy?”

Dennis frowns. “What do you mean?”

“I mean—”

“He’s talking about blowing my brains out, son.”

They both look at the old guy. He’s sending them an ugly smile.

“We’re not going to kill you,” Dennis says plainly.

“We’re not?” William asks.

Dennis shakes his head. “Why would we?”

“Well … he killed your mother.”

“I know. Would killing him bring her back?”

“No, but … it might make you feel better.”

Dennis looks like he just tasted something sour. “I’m pretty sure it would make me feel worse.”

“He doesn’t have the balls,” the old guy offers, grinning. “Honestly, son, I thought you’d be more like your mother.”

Dennis shakes his head slowly. “I’m not like her. And I’m not like you, either.”

William steps closer to Dennis and says in his ear: “Listen, this guy is a piece of filth. He’s a sociopath. He deserves to get a bullet to his head, not just for what he did to your mother.
