Chapter 19

MONDAY EARLY MORNING

The detective was dead.

Carver still needed Theresa to say it. To confirm it.

"You killed a cop."

"Like I said, no one important."

"You killed them first then came for me. In order of difficulty? Or convenience?"

"The detective got himself put on a list."

"A list? Because of me?"

"Because of you. Because of a nosy reporter."

"Elena Diaz?"

She didn't answer and her expression didn't change. "You and the detective were collaborating. That made him a priority."

"You used your blade. A good coroner will see the similarities to the wounds on Desmond Price."

"Not from a single killing thrust to the heart." She smiled innocently. "I don't even think he knew he was dead."

"Who is Nicki Jones to you?"

"Changing subjects won't get me to answer that."

"It's interesting that you're avoiding the answer." Carver studied her reactions. She was good at hiding her emotions. "Well, you don't know who employed you and you won't answer questions about your woman friend. I don't think you're useful to me anymore."

Her eyes twitched. "Might as well turn me into the police."

"I don't think so. At least not alive."

"Threats won't squeeze more answers out of me."

"I know." Carver slid the blade out of the duffel bag again. He walked within range. She was sitting cross-legged in the corner. It was an awkward position to react from and she knew it. She began to shift her position.

Carver pointed the gun at her. "Don't move."

"I'll answer all your questions."

Carver put the tip of the blade over her heart. "No, you'll lie. If the detective was still alive, I'd want you alive. But there's no point in letting you live now."

"There's more going on here than you realize. It's not a simple hit."

"Then what is it?"

"Give me guarantees and I'll tell you everything I know."

Carver lowered the blade. "Fine."

Theresa sprang upward. The top of her head slammed into the bottom of Carver's chin. The impact knocked him back. His teeth rattled in his head. He impulsively drove a knee up. It caught Theresa in the stomach. Her breath exploded with a grunt. Her hands whipped around, somehow free.

Carver fired the gun. Theresa slumped. Fell facedown. She groaned and tried to push herself up. Carver gripped the back of her shirt and rolled her over. Blood was seeping from a wound in her stomach. It wasn't normally fatal, but tonight it would be. He wasn't in a saving kind of mood.

He worked his jaw back and forth. His teeth ached. She'd really nailed him good. He'd never seen anyone jump from a cross-legged position so fast before. She was far more agile than he'd reckoned. And it nearly cost him.

Carver checked her hands for weapons, but she didn't have anything. Her thumbs looked strange. Dislocated. That had allowed her to worm her hands free. Enabled her hands to fold so small that the wire lost its grip.

Carver knelt a safe distance away. "For what it's worth, you're impressive. A work of art."

Theresa bared her bloody teeth. "Get me to a hospital, you psycho."

He shook his head.
