Sam jumped on Tiffany’s old bed like he was trying to break it. He wore his new red pajamas, his now-blond hair flopping up and down, the bed squeaking with every hop.

“Can you believe we’re in here?” Sam asked with glee. “Tiffany would have hated this!”

I put a glass of water on the nightstand. There were photos of Tiffany and her friends and a can of Aqua Net on the dresser, a poster of George Michael on the wall, her high school diploma framed above her vanity mirror, and a clock radio that blinked 12:00 that nobody bothered to fix.

“It’s time for bed,” I said, sounding like my dad when Nilou was up too late.

Sam stopped jumping. “Aw, come on. I’m not even tired.”

“Yeah, but I am.” Cori was, too. Sam shrugged and pulled back the comforter, settling himself under the sheets. I tucked him in. “Try and get some sleep. We’ll figure everything out in the morning.”

“What’s to figure out?” Sam asked.

“You know, how to keep you away from people who might recognize you. Where you’re going to live. You can’t stay here forever,” I said. “I’m going to college in the fall. I don’t know which school yet, but I can get an apartment and you can stay with me.”

“A life reset!”

“Yeah! It’ll be great!”

“We can do whatever we want? Stay up all night and watch R-rated movies?”

I already could see R-rated movies, but I appreciated the enthusiasm.

“We’ll make our own rules,” I agreed. I hesitated before I forced myself to continue. “Sam, about this afternoon. At the arcade. When all the games were going haywire . . . did you do that?”

Sam stared at me for a few moments. His face expressionless, his eyes blank, as though he were a battery-operated toy that had run out of juice. “It wasn’t me,” he said.

“You sure? You didn’t do anything to that kid?”

“I’m trying not to hurt anybody,” he murmured, looking down at the paisley-patterned comforter. It wasn’t a denial. He lifted his head. “You believe me, right?”

We stared at each other. I couldn’t give him the answer he wanted. I stood up and walked to the doorway, my hand on the light switch.

“I think it’s been a long day and there’s a lot we have to work out. The three of us, together.”

Sam nodded, wiggling into a more comfortable position.

“Maz? Could you keep the hall light on for a while?” Even after all this time, he was still a little spooked by the dark. Then again, for him no time had passed at all.
