Chapter 24

Carver rinsed off in the mayor's shower.

She got up and joined him before he could get out. "I really enjoyed that."

"Me too." He kept playing his part. The knight in shining armor who'd do anything for the damsel in distress. "How are you feeling?"

"Much better." She hugged him and let hot water course down her body. "I know you'll think of a way to get me out of this."

"What makes you think I can do that?" He'd considered asking her about the person or persons watching Joe's ranch. Just to see her reaction. But it felt more advantageous to seem unaware of them.

"Because you were a SEAL like Joe." She looked up at him. Rested her chin on his chest. "I know you have your ways."

"You may not like everything I do," Carver said. "I might do things that confuse you. You'll need to pretend to be angry with me to protect yourself."

Her forehead wrinkled. "I don't understand."

"I'll be doing things to elicit a reaction from people. It'll help me gather information."

She nodded. "Okay. I trust you."

He smoothed back her wet hair. Leaned down and kissed her. "Good."

Jessica sighed in contentment and kissed his chest. "I could stay here all night."

"Me too. But I've got to go. I need to talk to Andrea."

"Please do. She's in way over her head."

Carver turned off the water and dried off. He put his clothes back on. "Walk me outside?"

She nodded and hooked her arm in his. They walked back through the den and through the kitchen.

A ringtone started playing. A phone on the kitchen counter lit up. Video Call Incoming. There was a man's picture on the screen. Probably the contact picture. The man had buzzed hair and a stern look to his face.

Carver nodded at it. "Your boyfriend?"

She sighed. "No. One second." She picked up the phone and clicked to answer.

"We're here," a cold voice said.

"Let me call you back, okay?"

There was no answer but the phone played another sound and Jessica put the phone down. She'd been holding the phone toward her so Carver couldn't see who was on the other end of the video call.

Presumably it was the man in the picture. He looked like most of her other security detail. Former military types. Or at least men who like to pretend they were in the military.

"Sorry about that." She smiled. "I don't even know why they were calling me."

"Where were they?"

"They're here waiting outside." She shrugged. "Always keeping an eye on me." She led him out of the front door.

A guard outside the suite door stepped out of the way and shadowed them through the mansion and out of the front door. Carver kissed Jessica long and hard.

She bit his lower lip. Winked. "Drive safe."

"I'll keep it under a hundred." Carver got in the Ram and drove off. The gates opened on his approach and the guards waved him through. He drove to the main gate and the guard there did the same thing.

He looked for the man who'd called but didn't see anyone matching the picture.
