Chapter 9
Strip It, Strip It Real Good . . . Do Do Do Do Do
âI see someone did a little deforestation project since the last time I saw you naked,â Daisy shouts across the dressing room as I drop trou backstage at George Washingtonâs establishment.
âUh . . . yeah,â I blush furiously while I agree. âI cleaned up a bit.â
âNice work,â she nods, making my face burn even hotter.
Sometime after the funeral services for Christina were over, Granny, Marla, and I stood up and went over to Daisy, who was sitting with Christinaâs mother. The two women were crying together into dainty little hankies.
âOh, I guess we need to be getting you to the club,â Daisy said when she looked up and saw me standing there.
âNo,â I said on a soft smile. âIâm sorry to have interrupted.â
âCome here, girl,â the older woman gently commanded.
âYes, maâam.â I moved closer so that I could bend down into her space. I had the feeling that she wanted a private moment with meâor as private as one could get in a crowded funeral home.
âAre you the girl from the paper that Daisy has been talking about?â she asked me.
âYes, maâam, I am.â
âYouâre going to find who did this to my Christina,â she said, not asked. It was not a question to her.
âIâm sure the police are going to do everything they possibly can,â I told her.
âI know that,â she said. âI mean you.â
And I knew deep down that I would not deny this woman any help, just as I could not say no to my dear friend Daisy when she had asked me for help. No, Daisy hadnât ask me either; sheâd demanded that I help her, and I had readily agreed because it was the right thing to do. So I was going to help this woman too. I mean, I already kind of was, but with the decision made, I knew there was no going back. The die had been cast and the chips were going to fall wherever they may. Trent might not understand why I was doing what I was, but it was my decisionâit was always my decisionâand this was the only choice I could live with.
So I answered her the only way I could. âIâm going to do my best.â
After my awkward yet life-altering conversation with the mother of Daisyâs murdered friend, I decided I needed tacos.
âI need tacos,â I told the group at large after we pushed through the glass front doors of the funeral home. âToday was tougher than I thought it was going to be.â And yet, at the same time, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.
âAnd itâs not even over yet,â Granny said from beside me.
âTrue dat,â Marla answered her as she raised her fist up to be bumped by Granny.
âAnd you still gotta get naked for a bunch of strangers,â Daisy added helpfully while being not at all helpful.
âYay,â I fake-cheered. âTacos. Now.â
âI know just the spot,â Granny said.
