Chapter Forty-Seven

A s soon as Zack left her office, Bridget called her private investigator. “Dominic, anything on Dr. Winston?”

A short pause. “Not of any substance. Everything I’ve found matches what you already know. I’m trying to hunt down contemporaries from his navy tour. Maybe someone knows something that’s not in the official record. Wouldn’t be the first time an officer resigned for reasons not officially documented.”

“Keep looking,” she said. “What about the Barnetts?”

Dominic whistled over the phone. “Mr. and Mrs. Got-It-All? They have more dirt under them than the capitol building. Still digging.”

That piqued Bridget’s interest. “Such as?”

“Don’t know the whole story yet, but not long before he died Carl Barnett moved his personal assets into a trust that Janice couldn’t touch. He’d been talking to a divorce attorney.”

“Motive for conspiracy?”

“I’d almost bet on it. Janice has a separate bank account where she puts her nursing salary, plus Carl used to deposit some of his income there as well. Until he froze her out of his assets. Then that stopped.”

Bridget shook her head. “Not seeing motive, Dom.”

“That’s where I’m digging. For years, Janice withdrew substantial sums of cash, a thousand or more every month. No idea where that money went. Yet. She’s still doing it, but in lesser amounts since Carl cut her off.”

Bridget blew into the phone. “Sounds like she needs a cash-flow transfusion. A hefty malpractice settlement, perhaps.”

“What I’m thinking,” Dominic said.

“Would help to know where those cash withdrawals went,” Bridget said. “Keep digging.”

“Will do.”

Bridget paused before continuing. “I have an additional task for you.”

“Shoot.”

“A short time ago Bethesda Metro locked down for a feared chemical attack that turned out otherwise.”

“Yeah, some guy poisoned himself with insecticide.”

“Guy’s name was Walter Knowles. He worked as ER secretary at that hospital. Partner is one Roland Edwards. I need everything you can find on those two, and anything about that hospital locking down. As much detail as you can get.”

“On it, ma’am.”

“Thanks. Yesterday would be great.”

“Roger.”

“Please don’t say that word.” Bridget hung up and stared out the window. Something rotten indeed.
