Chapter 21
CARA SET THOMAS DOWN, sending a dirty look his way for Tomyx, who felt far too amused by this turn of events, and then she followed Emma out the door to the hallway. They stopped at a luxurious office. No dust covered the leather-topped desk or the shelves lined in old clothbound books, but the space felt distinctly unused, more decorative than functional. The idea of neglected books gave Cara the shivers. Or maybe that was the hard look on Emmaâs face. The willowy girl gestured to the leather sofa against one wall, and Cara reluctantly perched beside her.
âUm, what was that about?â She gestured in the direction of the kitchen.
âRhys? Nothing. He just threatened to tell Mak something I told him totally in confidence.â
âOh. Thatâs, um . . . How is Mak? Howâs college?â
âCollege is good. Makâs good. Great, actually. But his family thing tonight was too much pressure, and my parents are out of town, so Rhys invited me to come along here. And no changing the subject.â
âBut Rhysââ
âIs totally bluffing. Besides, this is important.â
âO-kay.â
âNow what the heck is going on with you?â
âGoing on?â
âCome on. When we talked in August, I thought everything was sorted out. I expected my best friend to be as happy as I am by now, and I do not appreciate the fact that I canât be all sappy around him without him going quiet on me. Whatâs your problem?â
Cara flinched. âNothing. Heâs great. It just didnât work out, thatâs all.â
âPlease.â Emma folded her arms. âIâve already got him trying to tell me heâs too busy to date now because of basketball starting up and a bunch of other garbage. I know him. I can see the strain of it on his face even over video chat. Then we get here and heâs falling over himself, and Iâm scared to walk between the two of you in case the heat burns me. Donât tell me thereâs nothing going on. So why arenât you together? Whatâs the issue?â
âItâs notâEmma, I donât know what to tell you.â
âWell, tell me something, because he wonât. And Iâm sick of seeing him all heartbroken while he tells me heâs fine. Itâs pissing me off.â
Emmaâs accusation hit her hard, but it didnât make sense. He never seemed upset. He was always joking and lighthearted, supporting her as much as he could without getting too close. It startled her to realize how much sheâd been clinging to his assurance that they would find a way to be together eventually. Sure, it wasnât ideal to hide a relationship from everyone they knew, or not to let it grow into anything more for now, but theyâd agreed it was for the best.
Then she thought of the mask he pulled up so easily. It had snapped into place after Joryâs parents had brought up his mom. At Halloween, it had covered his expression without trouble when she declined to dance with him. He put it on effortlessly whenever he joined their group at breakfast, or during training, when he couldnât let his feelings show.
