Overview: 3.0 mile one-way (6.0 miles round trip) hike to 1880' elevation ridge-top Stratton Brook Hut of Maine Huts and Trails (MHT). The Hut is located in a clearing bordered by a stand of Red Oak. The trail, designed for cross-country ski travel in winter, is up to 10ʹ wide, and gradedâand therefore without the rocks and roots common on many mountain hiking trails. The Hut is at the highest elevation of all huts in the MHT system at this writing. Outstanding views northward to the Bigelow Range, including the High Peaks of West Peak and Avery Peak; and south to Sugarloaf and Burnt Mountains.
Variety of day and overnight use itineraries possible in the area, including an up-and-back hike on the same trail; ascent by one route, and descent by the other; and access to connecting trails of the MHT System. The Crommett Trail, accessed by the Newtonâs Revenge Trail toward the Hut, and which affords more itinerary options, is described elsewhere in this book.
The 3.0 mile trail begins on the level terrain of the former Narrow Gauge Railway bed; then climbs steadily, and in the final 0.9 mile, steeply, to reach the Hut via the Newton's Revenge Trail. Oak Knoll Trail departs Newtonâs Revenge 0.6 miles from the Narrow Gauge Pathway to ascend steadily to a high plateau, traverse the western slope of the knoll, then climbs to a superb northwest lookout point before ending at the Hut.
