CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Eylin

"Come on," Blake urged. He pulled me closer to the beach.

"But… that's not a beach."

"Remember?" he asked. "I told you, it's not like the ones we're used to."

That was the understatement of the year. Maybe all of eternity.

"It's beautiful," Blake said, his tone softening. "In all my travels, I've never seen anything like it."

I stared at the fish swimming before us. A strange one with glowing eyes stopped at our level, almost appearing to stare at us. My body tensed, and Blake pulled me close.

"It's like we're in a snow globe," I whispered.

"Kind of," he said. "Although we're not surrounded by glass."

I stared at the ocean. It went out as far as I could see, but with as dark as the water was so far below the surface, visibility wasn't the greatest. I could definitely understand why the fish came near the mermaid city. They were attracted to the bright light.

"If it's not glass, what is it?"

"An impenetrable force field."

Of course. And I couldn't simply ask him how to leave. "Good to know we're safe."

He kissed my cheek. "You're in good hands, my sweet."

I could think of better hands I'd rather be in. "How did we get in if the force field is supposed to be impenetrable?"

"Magic, of course. Strong, powerful magic. Ancient."

Something I had no access to. I took a deep breath. We'd gotten in, so we could get out. It was just a matter of figuring out how—without getting myself thrown back into the dungeon.

"Let's walk," he said. We moved closer to the water. I wanted to reach out and touch it. If I knew what it was made of, that might help. Something, anything. I had nothing.

Some of the fish followed as we walked.

"Don't you just love the view?" Blake asked.

"It's amazing." That much was true. Being so close to the water, and watching the fish, was relaxing. I wasn't sure if that was good or bad. I definitely needed a break, but could I afford to let my guard down?

I studied the force field as we went along, but that didn't help. It was clearly not glass. It almost seemed like it was nothing at all. If I reached out and touched it, my hand would probably get wet. It appeared to be nothing at all, but if it was as sturdy as Blake claimed, it could possibly hurt anyone who tried.

"What are you thinking about?" Blake asked.

"Just trying to understand the sight."

"There's nothing like it anywhere else," he said.

"But why are we here? How?"

"I told you. Magic."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because it's safe."

I sighed. He would keep talking circles until I gave up. Blake had the ability to wear me out like no other. It came with the territory of being lifelong best friends. Or maybe it was just because he was a selfish jerk.

We strolled along for a while in silence. Then he stopped, turned to me, and took both my hands in his. "Isn't this the most romantic place you've ever been?"

I thought back to my secret honeymoon with Darius.
