GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

“Did you find anything yet, Tassel?” asked Angelica with a perturbed expression. “It’s been a week now with no word from her.” She paced the computer lab and picked agitatedly at her fingernails.

“Honestly, it’s been a challenge. I’ve checked the FBI records and can’t find any trace of her.” The tech’s fingers raced across her keyboard to shuffle from one shell command to another, open various websites, and run many search queries in the background. “I come up with the same information we intercepted earlier from the hospital’s records—released to FBI.” She spun her chair toward the other girl and adjusted her glasses. “I assume she’s in a witness protection program and if that’s the case, it’ll be complicated to discover her whereabouts.”

Angelica plopped into a nearby chair and sighed. “The irony of all this.”

Tassel stared curiously at her.

“My grandmother is a highly excitable woman and there were days she’d call me five or six times. She always claimed she had a presentimiento—a feeling that something bad had happened—but I knew it was only to check on me.” She looked at her companion with a half-smile on her face. “Now I’m worried about her and wonder how she’s doing and where she is.”

“You miss her, don’t you?” Tassel asked in a gentle voice.

She nodded. “A couple of weeks ago, I’d have cringed at the sight of her number popping up on my phone but now, I’m desperate to get one of her calls.” She paused for a moment in thought and to avoid tears welling for the hundredth time. “Tassel, I meant to ask you, what about the contact card I gave you that belonged to the agent?”

“Ooh, yes,” responded Tassel, spun swiftly on her chair, and rubbed her hands. She shifted her mouse, clicked a few times, and opened a file on her computer. “Daniel Javier Ortega,” she read aloud. “Served in the armed forces, was part of the Philadelphia Police Department, and was later transferred to the Lancaster Police Department as a detective before he joined the FBI.”

“Is there any information connecting him to my mother, Eva Santos?”

“Yes, sorry, was sidetracked by the details.” She cleared her throat and continued. “I did unearth a police report from the Lancaster Police Department and he was involved in your mother’s case, so he told the truth about knowing her.”

“Is that the police report in which Leonard Archie is mentioned?”

“It is—wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of Eva Santos as per the report,” the girl confirmed. “And by the way, this is still an open investigation in the Lancaster Police Department.”

“That case is closed in my book. There is no doubt in my mind who did it,” Angelica said emphatically.

“Hmm…” Tassel stared upward as she turned slowly in her chair.

“What’s the hmm for?” she asked curiously.

“Well, Mist was from Lancaster around the time your mother was killed. It makes me wonder if she knew anything about her or this case.”

“Do you think I should ask her?”

The tech shook her head.
