Make sure there is mandatory cardinality between the dimension levels.

All relationships between dimension levels must be mandatory. We need to avoid foreign key nulls on a dimensional model. If a specific Product does not roll up to a specific Product Line, for example, using a default value instead of leaving the foreign key in Product empty will minimize reporting errors.

On the following model, because there is mandatory cardinality on both sides of each of the relationships in this sales organization hierarchy, we cannot have empty nodes. If Bob at the Region level reports directly to the National level (skipping the Zone level), we need to put some value at the Zone level such as a 99 placeholder.
