Chapter 12

I don’t think anyone slept that night. When the sun rose the next morning, there was a mixture of reactions from the group. It all seemed like a bad dream. Some bizarre concoction of the mind from having drunk too much, but one look at Mr. Harris and it was clear this was real. How many other towns and cities in the nation had come under attack? How many would fall? It wasn’t like these things only ventured out at night, or were slow and clearly distinguishable. They were as ordinary looking as anyone else. That’s what made it so terrifying. There was no way to know who to trust. Anyone could be one of them.

Bones stood at the window peering out from behind a piece of wood he’d pried back.

“How is it out there?” I asked.

“Quiet.”

“You think they sleep?” Anna asked.

“If they don’t, they were probably busy last night,” Axl said as he walked over to a mini-fridge and pulled out a carton of milk and downed it. Everyone watched as he finished it. “Waste not, want not. I figure milk will be one of the first things to go. Come to think of it, if we are going to be heading out today, we will need to stock up on supplies, and salvage some food for the trip.”

“Trip? You guys keep talking about a trip but you have no idea where we would go?”

Vern wandered out from the back room. “I told you. Anywhere but here.”

“He’s right,” Bones interjected. “Once the military shows up here, chances are they aren’t going to seal off the area, they will turn this place into a fiery furnace.”

“You’ve watched one too many movies,” Anna said crawling out of her sleeping bag. That was one upside to being in the situation we were in. The store had everything a person could want to survive in the outdoors, except food and water. Well, it had MRE’s but not enough. Vern had been expecting a new shipment two days from now and with everything that had happened, that would no longer be an option. The same applied for vehicles transporting in gasoline, and food to grocery stores. The nation’s system would grind to a halt and folks would have to be creative if they wanted to survive.

I bit down on a green apple and thought about the shelters in North Dakota. I remembered thinking as I read the article that it would never happen. That buying one would have been a waste of money. But at $35,000 a pop, would that have really been a waste? It was a form of insurance. God willing, no one would have had to use it but having one now would have been a lifesaver. Having some sense of security in a nation that was on the verge of collapse would have gone a long way.

“So how’s our little friend doing?” Axl said getting up and heading over to the storage room. He went to open it up and his old man Vern barked at him.
