Johann Brandt

February 1941 – April 1941

17

Johann stopped his movements. Something didn’t feel right, as if an aura of evil hung in the air. He had left Oliver and Zaneta to their own devices and traversed four streets before he came to a halt. Whatever felt wrong didn’t reveal itself. There were the distant sounds of soldiers and vehicles moving in the background, but that was a normal part of Warsaw.

Johann took another step forward and he couldn’t keep going. Something was wrong. He plunged back towards Oliver and Zaneta. Robert was also in there so it couldn’t be that bad. Collaborators were always safe from the wrath of the Nazis.

As he came closer and closer he stopped as a truck went past. He feared the worst and drew his gun. Johann poked his head around the corner of the alleyway to see Wehrmacht soldiers waiting outside the apartment. Several had the door covered and there were even more outside. Johann wanted to fight his way through but knew he wouldn’t stand a chance.

“Come on, please let this be a mistake,” Johann muttered under his breath.

Johann sank back into the shadows when he heard another car coming in the direction of the main ghetto entrance. The black staff car came to a halt at the back of the truck. A driver climbed out of the back and opened the door.

Johann wanted to scream as Erich Brandt appeared in the night. Dressed in a long leather coat and pulling on a pair of matching gloves, he threw the Nazi salute at the assembled soldiers before him. Erich paused to speak to some of the soldiers present.

Johann’s fingers twitched as he gripped his gun. From here he could assassinate Erich. All he had to do was pull the trigger and the Oberstgruppenfuhrer would fall and never get up again. From the shadows Johann aimed his gun at Erich from a distance.

You deserve this, Erich.

Johann squeezed the trigger, but his finger twitched to a stop. Erich had started moving again. He marched into the house and disappeared. Johann’s arm fell limp. The split second of thought had saved Erich’s life.

He continued to wait to see what happened next. Johann replaced the gun in his pocket and clasped his hands together in prayer. He wasn’t a religious man, but now he prayed that the Nazis wouldn’t shoot Oliver and Zaneta dead in their bedroom. Johann would never forgive himself if he left in their hour of need.

“So what are we watching this time, then?”

Johann almost jumped out of his skin as Charlie stuck his head around the corner as well. The man’s eyes shined in the darkness like two shiny pebbles. He twitched his nose at what was going on down the street and appeared utterly unconcerned by what was going on.

Johann dragged him behind the wall by the collar. “The SS, my brother, has raided Oliver’s house, and Zaneta is in there as well.”

“Oh so that’s where the lass went then? I’d wondered why she stopped turning up.
