MY FINANCIAL RESERVES were holding, but beginning to worry me. I ducked into the bar. Marge stood at the ready while two customers drank in silence. A Johnny Horton song hummed through the speakers.

“Marge, I owe you money,” I threw up my hands in surrender.

She pointed toward the kitchen. I found Lucy cooking a pasta dish.

“Hey Lucy, I came to pay you.”

“Ha! You don’t know? You paid,” she said. “Till next Wednesday, you paid.”

I stared at her a long moment. In lieu of pinching myself, I scratched my head, then she continued, “Da lady wid red hair and she limp. She pay. You gave her good time?”
