Chapter 8

Adrian's stomach clenched and churned, tying itself into a knot as Andy loomed in the cramped hallway. Ronnie and Ian, his supposed friends, flanked him like two ominous sentinels, their silence adding to the growing tension.

"Well, look who's decided to show his face again."

He felt a fire ignite within him, burning with a fierce rage. He stood up taller, meeting Andy's gaze. "You think you can still push me around? Not anymore."

Andy's smirk widened, his eyes glinting with malice as he closed the gap between them.

“Ain't you a tough guy?” his buddies sneered. “You wanna get booted from school so you never have to see us again, scumbag?” The group cackled in unison. “But if we want to give you a schooling, it'll be when you're trekking home solo, with no teacher to protect your sorry ass.”

"You got nothin' better to do than harass me?" Adrian spat, his voice thick with venom. "Is that what gets you off? Bullying and terrorizin' others who ain't done a damn thing to you?"

"You think you're better than us? Huh? Think you're above all this shit?"

"I never claimed to be better than anyone," Adrian growled, barely containing his anger. "But I sure as hell won't let you or anyone else bring me down."

"Oh, you wanna talk back to me now? Well, go ahead, tough guy. But you'll regret it."

With a shove to Adrian's shoulder, Andy and his cronies sauntered off, leaving him alone in a crippling state of embarrassment.

Adrian slammed his locker with a loud bang. The throbbing pain in his shoulder only added fuel to the fire as he yanked out his books and faced the chaotic swarm of students in the hallway. Amidst the loud noise, Rebecca Clark appeared like a beacon of perfection in her pristine cheerleader uniform. But there was no cheer on her face - only fury and resentment.

"I loathe those mindless brutes who bully anyone new here," she said.

Still reeling from his altercation with Andy, he wanted to retreat. He had never been the one to catch a girl's eye before, especially not someone as mesmerizing as Rebecca. But he had to keep his cool and act like it was no big deal.

"Hey, thanks," he said, shrugging casually. "I'll try my best to ensure it doesn't happen again."

"Rebecca," she said, extending her hand.

"Adrian," he said, limpingly shaking it.

She smiled and ran a hand through her chestnut hair, revealing the delicate curve of her neck. Adrian maintained eye contact despite his thoughts straying to other parts of her body. He'd never been this close to a girl before.

Glancing at his locker, she asked, "So what tunes are you jamming out to on that Walkman?"

He shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to admit that he mainly listened to metal. But then she surprised him by confessing, "I love metal too! My parents hate it, though. My mom says it's the Devil's music."

"Yeah, my parents aren't fans either." He finally looked up into her warm brown eyes and asked, "Do you like
