‘Just because you’ve got a plaster on your leg doesn’t mean you’re getting off with anything, pal.’ Willis had rung Palmer as soon as he had finished his porridge. ‘I’d like you to do us a favour. Sophie and I are leaving for Almaty this afternoon. We have a name. The guy who tried to kill us calls himself Yerkin – at least, that’s how he answered his mobile.’

‘What accent did he have?’

‘I have more info than an accent. He speaks Russian, but he may be Kazakh. Their second language is Russian, so we have a name and probably an area of origin. Will you tell Baker and Reilly? Either British or US intelligence must have a file on him. If they don’t, we will contribute a few entries if they want to create one.’

‘Listen, Brad. I owe you an apology. I was well out of order. I’m sorry. It was my American stubbornness getting the better of me. I hate to take orders, especially from a Brit. As a civilian, I’m not used to taking orders, and this is the first time I’ve been in a situation where I’ve needed to. You’re one of the good guys. I’m truly sorry.’

A weight was immediately lifted off Willis’s shoulders. ‘I’m pleased you told me. Let’s forget about it – we have a job to do.’

‘And thanks for dragging me out of the burning corridor.’

But Willis didn’t forget it: Palmer’s negative attitude had been bothering him, and he had avoided dealing with it. Now it was no longer necessary. Although Willis was confident in many ways, he was a coward when it came to confronting those he worked with. He’d known this for some time. He smiled ruefully. No one was perfect.

Palmer wanted to ensure that Willis got as much support as he needed. He decided to search the files and find out all he could. Anything he could find, he would report. He felt guilty and wanted to make it up to Brad for not being supportive before. His leg ached like hell, but he put it out of his mind and knuckled down to work. He and Willis agreed to use the code word ‘ultra’ to signify urgency in any message and agreed that Willis would call Greg ‘Palmer’ if he thought someone else was listening. Greg picked up his phone and dialled.

They arrived at Almaty without incident. Lufthansa Flight 648 had landed five minutes early, at 17.25. Reilly had done a good job. Willis and Sophie picked their papers up at Frankfurt, as he had promised. Sophie had giggled at the idea of being Mr and Mrs Callow. The new passports were American; even Willis’s trained eye could not fault them. He checked the dates and location details of the immigration stamps and committed them to memory, then checked that Sophie’s details matched his before making sure she too memorised her past itinerary.

Almaty Airport was small. Willis remembered the airport because two-thirds of it had burnt down in 1999 in a fire that started in the kitchen.
