Chapter Seven

“I didn’t know if I’d hear back from you after . . .” Preston Silvia paused for a moment, his tone turning somber. “After Atticus’s passing.”

It was such a difficult concept to grasp. In some deluded daydream, Duke considered Atticus still alive, roaming the Outlands in search of revenge. But daydreaming aside, life moved on.

The tick-tock of time’s march stops for no man.

Biting down and burying his emotional discord, Duke had a new goal in mind. No longer was he only fighting for a better tomorrow. Now, he carried the weight of Atticus’s suffering on his shoulders. Duke never wanted to act in revenge; he merely wanted to help those who suffered. But with an assassin claiming his friend’s life, Duke understood Atticus’s lifestyle, his drive, his determination.

Duke was out for blood, and he would stop at nothing to get it.

Duke rested a shoulder against a paint-stripped street lamp that had just flicked on with the oncoming night. Preston stood near him on the sidewalk. He had a cigarette in one hand as he awkwardly kicked a pile of dust.

Preston was the first to arrive from the many whom Duke wanted to speak with that night. Like Atticus, he held the world on his shoulders, and if he didn’t make a move on Indigo soon, the rebellion might lose their window to strike.

“I didn’t know if I’d get back in touch,” Duke finally replied. “But Atticus saw something in your Andolyte and had the vision it might do some good. So, I guess I should thank you for meeting me here tonight.”

Preston opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Granger Wallis, who joined the two.

“Good evening, gents,” Granger said.

There’s nothing good about it. Duke brow’s furrowed.

But he supposed Granger and Atticus only had a short time together; they had no significant bond. Granger would have no reason to pretend that he was in suffering.

Duke fought back the urge to shout from the top of his lungs and rip into Granger.

“Evening,” Preston replied. “Anyone else we waiting for?”

“Two more. Jessop Reed and one of my boys,” Duke said.

The street was emptying now, and in the distance, Duke saw Jessop approaching. As the first tester of the Andolyte and synthetic armor, Duke saw him as the leader of Atticus’s twenty chosen. He walked with confidence, a stern look in his eye; he had the face of a man who’d seen too much and done far worse.

Good, those are the kind of men needed for what’s going to happen in Chicago.

Floyd Kimberlin was the last to make his way to the group. He was a young man that Duke saw promise in. His role in the meeting was merely listening, taking notes, and delivering them across the rebellion. They were on the very edge of the hostile takeover of Chicago, and with the rebel’s numbers steadily increasing, Duke couldn’t deliver the message to everyone himself.

“Right this way, gentlemen,” Duke said, leading them into his home.

He brought them into his former bedroom, which had been converted into a makeshift war room.
