Chapter Twenty-two
The streets were damp with the rain that had poured earlier as I paced among the loud, young crowds as they walked braving the cold. The youngsters must have thought, Here is a lonely old man still looking for something. Or they thought nothing at all. But I was looking for something, and I had found it.
There was no information about Christopher Black on the internet, which was unbelievable given whom he was linked to, but I guessed if he knew the right people and paid enough, he could make anything disappear. However, his club was listed on Google and was located on a side street in Soho. I heard music thumping from the outside as two men dressed in black stood by the door. There was no crowd outside yet, but it was still early. âDust and Bonesâ was displayed in a white sign, and the entrance was made of black marble. The security guards glanced at me as I was about to make my way in, but they didnât stop me.
I pushed open the door, and heavy metal music enveloped me; the kind of music that was so obscured one wouldnât hear what the singer was singing about. A young woman by the door told me I had to pay to get in. I scowled at her but paid while she kept casting suspicious glances at me. Her blue hair was cut in a bob, her face was heavily made up and she wore a spiked collar around her neck with a leather crop top. She asked if she could take my coat, but I shook my head and made my way further inside, glancing over my shoulder to see if the girl was going to notify her manager, which I assumed would be Christopher, but she was attending to a couple who came in after me. The dance floor was empty and flashed with red lights, and the club air was freezing. There was a DJ stand, but no one was playing, and there were two large, empty cages by the DJ stand. The stage at the other end had a curtain that was closed.
I located the bar where another girl with black hair cut in a bob and who wore the same outfit as the hostess came forward. I asked for a beer, and she served me promptly. At the far end of the bar were two young men with long hair wearing band T-shirts and leather jackets, and who were banging their heads to the music.
I took my time as I sipped my beer and observed my surroundings. I glanced up at the second floor, which was also empty. Young people filed in â the men in leather and silver, and the women in heavy makeup wearing uncomfortable-looking shoes. Soon the club was packed, which made me feel less exposed.
There were cameras on each corner of the wall, and one pointed directly at me. The music changed to electronic, with a heavy beat still too obnoxious for my taste.
