CHAPTER SEVEN

“HONEY, WE HAVE ARRIVED!” Heidi exclaims, flinging open the bar’s double doors.

Sam shuffles after her, feeling somewhat self-conscious. Heidi is dressed to kill, as ever. She wears a form-fitting dress with a floral print accentuating every curve. If anyone can take their eyes off that, they’ll see a pair of Jimmy Choos on her feet, and an Armani handbag which probably cost more than Sam’s monthly salary. By contrast, Sam is wearing one of her nicer work blouses and a knee-length skirt, with work shoes that have frankly seen better days. She shouldn’t be surprised, she tells herself. This is how it’s always been. She has accepted her role as the plainer, less flamboyant friend who tends to fade into the background. However, the last thing Sam expected to do was go out for a night on the town when she packed for the trip, and her unpreparedness only accentuates the differences. Heidi offered to loan her one of her outfits, but, given the difference in their shapes and heights, Sam was pretty sure she’d look like someone had wrapped a water-filled balloon in cling film, so she’d politely declined.

Heidi grabs a table close to the dance floor and waves over a server, ordering for them both. Heidi loves to party, and this gives Sam pause. Her friend’s modus-operandi is to get her alcohol levels up as quickly as possible, then let loose.

The bar is a neon and chrome assault on the senses. The dancefloor looks like a mirror ball, with a mosaic of reflective pieces beneath what seems to be tempered glass. Whenever the overhead laser lights sweep across it, the beams bounce off in all different directions. The walls are mostly mirrored too, with neon signs and chrome shelving running the length of the place. It’s pretty intense. Toward the front of the bar is a seating area where they are still serving food to some of the more conservatively dressed diners while the party crowd filter through for their night’s drinking and dancing. Sam is painfully aware that she and Heidi are at least a decade older than the other dancers, but Heidi is oblivious. The music is pure Magaluf, with a bass line that thumps through the bones.

“What did you order us?” Sam yells over the music.

“Two-for-one cocktails, baby! We’ve got a mojito and a blue lagoon each, plus two jägerbombs to start us off.”

Sam groans. “You know I can’t have a late one, right? I’m meeting someone for work at seven tomorrow morning. I can’t do that dying on my arse.”

Heidi pouts. “You’re no fun anymore. But I promise to be good. Don’t worry, Cinderella; I’ll have you home by midnight.”

Sam doesn’t believe a word of it but promises herself that she’ll be in a taxi well before that, no matter how much Heidi whines and pleads.

Their drinks arrive, and Heidi raises her jägerbomb. “Here’s to getting you the fuck out of that farm and away from your creepy-ass uncle.”

She downs the drink in one and turns the glass over on the table.
