Chapter 13

Dear Leo,

Well, here I am, the Marchioness of Bainbridge. My new relations are a rum lot and no mistake. I do not know what I shall do with them. There is a strong temptation to run away screaming but you know how stubborn I am when faced with a challenge. I suppose I must soldier on.

I must tell you, however, that I do not regret marrying Bainbridge, so please would you cease muttering about calling him out—I know you too well and the chances of you having stopped being cross with him are minute. So I wish you to listen as I tell you he’s rather wonderful and I’m incredibly happy, and really Leo, if you’d spent five minutes in his family’s company you would quite understand why he thought trapping me into marriage the thing to do. I shall try my best to encourage good behaviour in the future, but these things take time. I mean look how many years it’s taken me to make a decent brother out of you!

Anyway, I must ask a favour of you. My first act of rebellion against my evil grandmother (yes, I really do have one) is to help Hugo elope. He’s Bainbridge’s younger brother and rather a wet blanket but the girl he wishes to marry sounds an excellent sort. I’m sure she can make something of him. I am telling the family he’s gone to visit you but actually he’s heading to Gretna Green. I’m only warning you in case anyone asks questions. Don’t give the game away, brother dear!

―Excerpt of a letter from Arabella Grenville, The Most Hon’ble, The Marchioness of Bainbridge, to her brother, Mr Leo Hunt.
