Chapter XII

April 1812 - Pemberley

From her position at the smaller desk in Pemberley’s study, Elizabeth noticed her husband’s concern as he read some correspondence.

“Is there a problem, Will?”

He frowned, shook his head, and said, “I’m not sure. My friend, Dickie Cummings, says he has a problem that he cannot solve and asks me to come to his estate and give him a hand. But…he does not say what the problem is. And that is totally unlike him. In person, he is very voluble, speaking on and on with plenty of detail. However, there is nothing like that here.”

“Perhaps it is because it is in a letter rather than face to face. Could that be the difference?”

“Possibly.” Darcy thought for a moment then added, “There is time today, and his estate is not that far. If I take the pass through the mountain, I can be there within two hours. With luck, I can help solve his problem in a short while and arrive back here before dark.”

“I’m sure he will appreciate you responding so promptly.”

“Yes, and if I am delayed, I’ll send a note with a servant and stay overnight if need be.”

It pleased him that his wife seemed a little perturbed that he might stay the night, and not with her. Will had slept every night with his wife since their wedding, and he had no desire for that to change anytime soon…or ever.

With a sigh, he arose from his desk, went over to his wife’s chair and pulled her to her feet. Then he gave her a kiss that nearly made her swoon.

“I will miss you, my love.”

“And I you, my darling.”

All the way to the pass, Darcy contemplated the oddness of Dickie’s letter. The unease he felt was like an itch he couldn’t scratch. Shaking his head, he sighed and resolved to not worry about it for he would soon be at his friend’s home and could get his questions answered.

Rounding the only curve on this particular road through the mountain, Darcy was shocked when a rope settled and quickly tightened around his shoulders, and he found himself thrown to the ground and the wind knocked out of him. Struggling to rise, he was prevented when four men pounced on him, knocked him out and gagged him. He was trussed up like a turkey and then tossed in the back of a wagon which was then covered over with a tarpaulin.
