Chapter Thirteen

Amelia

Something has been going on for a couple of days. I’m not sure what. I saw some girls in the house and then police officers came, and some women came. From what little I could gather from Sylvia, who was very tight lipped, the women were healthcare workers and something awful had happened to the girls.

It is past the date I had promised myself I would call Grandmother if I decided to stay here. Giovanni had told me he’d press me for an answer, but so far, he hasn't been to see me at all.

Has he decided I’m not worth bothering with? Perhaps he’s forgotten all about me?

A bird sings outside, and a warm, floral scented breeze blows through the open windows. Light streams onto the desk in front of me. The book I have on the desk is stunning. It is a Dulac illustrated version of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales and was originally published in 1911. It’s in English, and I’m carefully dusting the spine and outer bindings. The rarest books, I haven't touched. I’m noting the titles down carefully in a notebook, but I won’t touch them until the restorer is here. This one is strong enough to take down from the shelves, though, and once I’ve cleaned the outside, I’ll take a look at the illustrations.

Working in this space is wonderful. It’s soothing and restorative, and I honestly don’t think I’ve been as happy before as I am when I’m sitting amongst these books, cataloging them. I feel like truly me for the first time.

Then, of course, there’s the owner of this incredible library and the way he makes me feel.

No other man has ever made me feel the way he does, and I want to explore it further.

The library door crashes open, and the man himself storms into the room, bringing lots of dark energy with him. One look at his face, and I know he’s pissed. His brown eyes appear almost black, and his jaw is covered in what looks like a few days’ worth of growth. His hair is not gelled, but wavy and thick as it curls around his shirt collar. The shirt is white linen, with the sleeves rolled up and the top button undone.

I stare at him for a long moment. The man looks good enough to eat. Utterly stunning. Better than I’ve ever seen him. He has the kind of looks that could stop traffic. I want to reach out and run my hands over his stubble and feel those waves in his hair.

Not that I’d dare approach him right now. There’s an air of danger around him, and it would be a foolish person who approached this man with the vibes he’s currently giving off.

“You haven’t given me your answer,” he snaps.

Immediately I bristle. “Erm, you never came to see me and ask me.”

He makes an irritated click of his tongue against the roof of his mouth and gives a jerk of his head. It’s such an arrogant gesture that it provokes me into being even more pissed off.
