Clued Out
Whatâs that, Nancy?â Augusta asked innocently. âDid the kitchen staff leave something on your plate?â
I stared at her. She couldnât have planted this note, could she? Sheâd been sitting with us the whole time. My mind clicked back to Augustaâs behavior since we arrived at Fortnum & Mason. Come to think of it, she had made a trip to the ladiesâ room before we sat down. I figured she wanted to freshen up after her fainting spell. But could she have given the note to the waiter and asked him to place it under the scone?
I handed the note to Bess and Augusta, who were sitting next to each other. âWho put this under your scone, Nancy?â Bess asked as she scanned the message.
Augusta seemed just as surprised as Bess. âWeird!â she exclaimed. âIs someone after you or something, Nancy?â
I studied her face, which mixed surprise, confusion, and amusement, as if she thought the note might be a silly trick. Guilt was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she was just a really good actress. Being in the theater, sheâd have lots of opportunities to observe skilled actors, wouldnât she?
I glanced back at the note. âIt says I need to be at this store at the end of the day. Augusta, do you know what time the sun sets here?â I couldnât remember anything from the day before. It was one big blur after Dad went missing.
Augusta frowned. âSunset would be between eight and nine p.m., I believe. I canât tell you exactly, Nancy, but in May the sun wonât set for a while because weâre so far north. Winter is another story, though. Then the sun sets in the middle of the afternoon.â
âSo if we get to the store between eight and nine, that should do it?â Bess asked.
âIâd say so,â Augusta said. âWhat a thoroughly odd note. Do you girls have any idea what it could possibly be about?â
âNo,â I said. âBut Iâm curious to find out more about this store.â
âWell, be careful,â Augusta warned. âYou have almost three hours to change your mind about going there. I hope you donât go. It sounds dangerous.â
I checked my watch. A wave of cold, like ice water, washed through me. It was nearly five oâclock and no really good clues on Dad had come our way since he disappeared. Heâd been missing for almost a whole day! He could be anywhere, in any situation. Though probably a bad one since kidnapped people usually donât get the red-carpet treatment. Maybe the police would have good news by now. I longed to call them, but I didnât want Augusta to know more about me than I could help. Despite her show of innocence, she was still a suspect.
Where could Dad be? My anxiety about him was blasting through me like an air conditioner, chilling my thoughts. But I had to think straight for Dadâs sake. Wherever he was, he depended on me. Still, keeping a grip on my emotions was incredibly hard. I mean, I had no idea if he was even okay.
