Lovers Doing Loverly Things
Adelita
Itâs not until midnight that Santos and Rafael finally emerge from the bathroom. I canât stop apologizing, stuck on repeat until the bags under their eyes and the war-torn looks fade away. âI didnât know. Santos, Iâm so sorry. I would never hurt you like that on purpose!â
Santos manages a weary smile, forgiving me far easier than I ever will. He waves off my concern and points to the bag on the desk. Then he mimes eating.
âOh, Cruz picked up dinner. Let me get you a plate.â I want to help in any way I can, but Santos rests his hand on my arm, letting me know he doesnât want that. He wants to do it himself, and stubborn mule that he is, he reaches for two plates, as if Iâll be okay with him waiting on me after the evening heâs endured. âNo, my heart. I can get my dinner. Please donât wait on me. This whole thing is just⦠Donât be nice to me. Donât forgive me.â I turn from the confusion pursing his lips and face Rafael. âWhat do you want to eat, sweetie? Go sit on the bed. Iâll get it.â
Rafael doesnât have the same qualms about me waiting on him, so I fix his plate and bring it over. I fuss over him, making sure he has everything he needs before I check his arm for the scar.
âItâs gone, viento. Completely gone. Itâs like new skin or something. I donât understand it. Iâve had that thing for a year.â
I pull on my fingers as the angst in me builds. âPlease forgive me, Rafi. I shouldnât have experimented on you like that.â
Rafael manages a smile, as only he can do after what sounded like surgery without anesthesia. âNo more apologizing. Why would I be mad at you for healing me? Thatâs what you did, you know. I donât care if it hurt for a few hours. You healed me.â
I fight the urge to tell him how sorry I am again.
Rafael tilts his head up at me, taking in my anxiety with compassion. Maybe people think Rafael is a joker, but I know a kind heart when I see it.
He jerks his chin to the spot next to him and I take it because Iâm selfish. I like his arm around my shoulders and the easy way he kisses my temple, like weâve known each other for years. âYouâre all bent out of shape, but really, weâre better than weâve ever been. Just tired. Tell me I look incredible with my arm all smooth like this.â
Rafael pulls me closer so my forehead rests in the crook of his neck. My hand climbs up to loop around his shoulder, holding him while he holds me.
âI donât like to see you all marked up,â I admit. âI donât like that anyoneâs ever hurt you. You are precious to me.â
I can feel his jaw move as a smile takes him over. âYouâre my little softy. I like thisâhaving you around.
