Ellie was hardly beside herself. After a morning spent navigating hallways filled with whispers speculating about my disappearance and subsequence reappearance, lunch couldn’t have come quickly enough. I’d scanned my schedule the second I’d received it, annoyed to see I didn’t share a single class with Ellie. Lunch would be different. At least that’s what I kept promising myself.

I crossed the threshold into the cafeteria, the familiar buzz a welcome respite to my ears. After all morning listening to people talking about me while pretending they weren’t, being somewhere where my classmates were just hanging out was a relief.

Ellie was exactly where she was supposed to be, seated at the best table in the cafeteria—a completely full table. There was no seat for me, but why would there be? Yes, I’d sent a few text messages—which had gone unanswered—but I’d thought this was the one place I’d find some degree of normal. As if she felt me looking her direction, her chin tilted up, and her eyes focused on me. Her hand lifted from the table as she gave a polite wave before continuing on with her conversation with the members of her court.

I’d been replaced.
