Amanda was out, no doubt entrancing the ladies at the W.I. with a firsthand account of the competition's exciting atmosphere. I handed over to Mrs. Norris the photos we had borrowed for the wedding event booth.

"Is Michael baking today?" I asked.

"You will find him downstairs," she answered. "He is fulfilling a last-minute catering order in the company of Miss Sands, I believe."

"Thanks."

I made my way down to Michael's domain, where I found him dicing ingredients for making tiny tea sandwiches. Kimmie was helping, an apron covering her cute checkered skirt and t-shirt covered with smiley faces. She wore a hair net underneath the little black beret that was cocked to one side.

"What have we here?" I asked. "Michael, I didn't know you had a full-time assistant."

"I have an annoying helper," he retorted, scraping celery and onion into his bowl.

"He's teaching me the amazing culinary secrets behind an exotic dish," she answered.

"Japanese egg salad," he answered, snorting. "It's not rocket science."

"Little do the ladies at this luncheon know they will be eating sandwiches made by the famous comedian Kimmie Sands," she said, gesturing towards herself. "I imagine them eating it, saying 'aren't these delightful, Saundra?' 'Why yes, Gladys, simply delectable. I can't remember when I had any so scrumptious.'"

"Your people in your head are simpletons, apparently." Michael opened the jar of mayonnaise. "The eggs are in the bowl beside the fridge, with the fresh parsley for the cream fraiche sauce I'm making."

"He trusts me like the master apprentice he never had," she said to me, as she fetched the ingredients sitting there, along with a decanter of chilled cream.

"I should tell you, by the way, that I was amazed by our friend the police sergeant last night," she said to me, as she began shelling eggs into the bowl beside the cutting board. "All those stereotypes about coppers in big boots simply flew out the window when he started dancing with Louisa."

"He impressed the judges, which is all he had to do," I said. "But he impressed a lot of his friends among the audience there and at home."

The village was spreading the compliments thick today, when I had stopped by the fish and chips shop for a quick cup of coffee. Gone were the jokes about the station putting Charlie up to making a fool of himself for a good laugh — now everyone was thinking that Flash Dance was an instructional tape for putting the groove in somebody's move, so to speak.

I opened the biscuit jar, after sneaking a glance at Michael. He caught my eye and nodded. "Cranberry oatmeal," he said to me. "Help yourself."

"Thanks." I took one and chewed a generous bite out of it. "Mmm, delicious as always."

"It's Dinah's recipe, but she's not putting them in the shop this season," he said. "I'm trying out some quick recipes to use for some of the tea platters."

"I told him that we have to take these on our picnic that I'm planning," said Kimmie, as she peeled another egg and added it to her pile to chop.
