At one point, I'll lean in and whisper to Dawn, 'You're doing great. We make a pretty convincing couple, don't you think?' She'd look at me in amusement and answer, 'Yeah, surprisingly convincing.' As the event wraps up, I'll genuinely thank her, and she’ll nod and say, 'Sure, Jonathan. I had fun doing this.'

And boom! The fake romance will be over, and we'll be back to reality. Yeah, this will work for sure. What’s the worst that could happen, huh? I mean, apart from her turning me down and making me embarrassed, there is nothing else that could mar this perfectly strategized plan. Now, I just have to tell her about it.

I stood up from my office chair and walked out to search for her. I didn't know how she would feel about this, and I was half scared she would turn me down. But I would never know until I tried. I found her in Eddie's room, playing with him and his building blocks.

It was a perfect little scene, reminding me of how I imagined my late wife would have played blocks with him whenever he was sad. Leaning on the door frame, I watched them with a smile. Neither of them had noticed me yet.

“Jonathan,” Dawn finally called, noticing me.

“Dad!” Ed ran towards me with outstretched arms. I picked him up and spun him around a few times as he giggled.

“Oh boy, what is Dawn feeding you? You’re getting so big! You’re almost too heavy for me to pick up.” I teased as I tickled him, and his giggles grew louder. Dawn was laughing where she sat."

“Come on, son, why don't you go out and ride your bicycle for a bit while Daddy talks to Miss Dawn, okay?” I say, putting him down. He shakes his head vigorously in response.

“Huh, what’s that? You don't want to go ride your bike?” I ask, squatting.

He shakes his head again. “No, Dad. I want ice cream,” he squealed happily, making me laugh.

“Alright, let’s see if it’s the right time for a little ice cream,” I say, checking my watch; it's a little bit past 2:00. “Okay, come on. Let’s go get ice cream.” Eddie squeals as I picked him up, and we head downstairs to the fridge.

I place him on one of the kitchen chairs and proceed to get strawberry ice cream from the freezer. I open it up and scoop out a reasonable portion in a smaller bowl, just enough for him not to get a brain freeze.

“Thanks, Dad,” he says, digging in with his spoon. I smile, ruffle his hair, and then rush back upstairs.

“He's growing fond of you,” I tell Dawn as soon as I get back upstairs.

“I know, it's this little charm thing I carry about, but it's a secret, so—” She teases, placing her fingers on those seductive lips while making a shushing sound. My eyes linger there for a while, what did they taste like?

I snap out of that unholy thought immediately; I’m here on a mission.
