Chapter Fourteen

A couple more days passed. I walked and did my therapy every day. I didn’t feel like I was getting much better with my speech, but my body felt stronger. I regained some of my energy. I wasn’t sleeping half the day away anymore. I could usually get the words out that I wanted to say, but most of the time they weren’t in order. Most of the bandages had been taken off, but a few still covered the areas where I had surgery. If I did anything but sit still and breathe, my ribs hurt.

The doctors talked about letting me out in a few more days, which made me happy. I needed to get out of here. It was depressing. Other than the music, I didn’t really have anything to do. I could watch TV, but most of the programs were reruns because it was summer.

One of the things that hurt the most was missing my high school graduation. I had finished my finals and passed everything, but I had been in the hospital when my class graduated. I hated Josh for taking that away from me. Now, I didn’t know if I’d have a college graduation. I couldn’t talk, read, or write…how was I going to go to college?

That was all taken away from me because I had to pick the wrong guy to fall in love with. He took my heart, my baby, my voice, my education, my future…everything. There would never be a normal for me.

Miranda came every day. She’d stay as long as she could. She had to go back to work, so she wasn’t here all the time anymore. My parents didn’t come as much either. I guessed once they knew I’d be okay they went back to their normal lives. Sophie came a couple of times. I don’t think anyone really realized the severity of my head injury. I began to wonder if anyone cared. Somewhere deep inside me I knew I’d never be the same again. I might talk correctly again, I might read and write again, but I’d never be the same girl.

I was allowed to go home at the end of June. The nurses changed all my bandages and gave me some to take home. “You shouldn’t need more than this. Just watch the incisions through the weekend.”

“Okay.”

One nurse handed me a folder of papers. “This is all your discharge information. This will tell you what to look out for, what you can and can’t do, and when to call your doctor. It also lists your medications.” The nurse pulled out a sheet. “This is a pain medication, so is this one. And the third one is an antibiotic.” I nodded.

“The last part is about your therapy. You’re scheduled for an hour every day for a month. As time goes on, it’ll become less and less. Hopefully, you’ll make a complete recovery. You also need to make follow-up appointments with the neurologist, a pulmonary doctor, and a regular doctor. Do you understand all this?”

“Yes.
