CHAPTER NINE
Their days settled into an uneasy pattern. Lucy cooked and cleaned, did the laundry and every now and then found time to wander down to the creek drawn by the murmur of the running water and the cool breeze.
Scout had taken to going out every day and supervising the barn construction. âHe does more than I think he should,â Wade commented several times.
Lucy didnât bother to say that from her experience, Scout did far less than she thought he should. But then they were talking about entirely different things. Wade meant work and health; she meant time and interest. Again, she reminded herself, the past was gone. Done. She had only the future to consider but it seemed life was on holdâwaiting for whatever came next. She wished she knew what it might be. She knew her future was in Godâs hands, but still she often felt a restless stirring deep inside as if there was more and she was somehow missing it.
She sighed. It was only because being here reminded her too keenly of the pain of her childhood and made her forget the strength sheâd found as an adult. God, help me keep my eyes on You and what You promise. The words of a familiar verse came to mind, âJesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.â And she was comforted and strengthened to face the uncertain future.
It had been a few days since Wade brought in meat. Heâd been busy working on the new barn. She missed the fresh addition to the meals. The limited supplies in the cellar hampered what she could make. But she wasnât about to complain about the hospitality offered.
Wade and Roy had come to the house for a drink of water.
Scout came from the corrals. Lucy had noted how thin he wasâthe aftermath of his illness. Over the past few days his color had lost its pastiness and his step had grown steadier. âHey, Roy, Iâve been looking for you. Thought weâd go hunting together.â
Roy jumped off the porch so fast Lucy feared he might break something. He raced to Scoutâs side, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. âCan I shoot the gun?â
Scout grinned. âWeâll see. You want to help saddle my horse? Weâll ride double.â
The pair headed for the corrals, Scout tipping his head to catch every word Roy said. Scoutâs attention was good for Roy. Lucy didnât resent it a bit. She only wished sheâd had even a fraction of her fatherâs attention when she was a child.
She turned away and met Wadeâs quiet look. Quickly she shuttered her regrets and hurts. It was the past. It had nothing to do with who she was today. Or what she needed. She corrected herself. She needed nothing except a place to temporarily hide from Smitty. Last night sheâd made up her mind to see how things lay in that direction and had written Hettie, hoping to post the letter in the near future.
âI planned to go to town.
