Dakota Wedding: Chapter Six

Abby stood at the sink and looked out the window where the “boys” were playing. It was hard to believe that it had only been four weeks since she’d arrived in South Dakota. The boys had taken to Ian quickly. To Ian’s credit, all his attention toward the boys had made the transition here easier.

She leaned forward and opened to the window to let the cool fall breeze refresh the kitchen.

“Introducing, the Master of Oak Leaf Hill, Jonathan Martin!” Ian’s theatrical voice boomed above the laughter of the children as they raced around the leaf pile they’d created under the big oak tree that commanded space in the back yard.

“What about me?” Jacob jumped up and down in front of Ian, who was holding a stick he’d been using as a pretend sword.

Ian took the stick and tapped Jacob on one shoulder and then the other. “You, Master Jacob, are the Lord of the Oak.”

Abby chuckled at the confused face Jacob and Jonathan gave him.

“You both can still jump in the leaf pile.”

Both of the boys giggled and dove into the pile of leaves.

Lola’s cry chimed in through the baby monitor. She’d only been asleep for a half hour. That wasn’t like her.

Abby climbed the stairs and peeked out the window on the landing to see Ian and the boys rolling around in the leaves. But Lola’s cry pulled her away and had her rushing up the stairs. When she got to the room, she turned on the light and scooped Lola up in her arms. Lola was tugging at ear and her cheeks were flush.

“What is it, sweetie?” Abby kissed Lola on her forehead. The contact scorched her lips. “How about we give a call to Dr. McKinnon, sweet pea?”
