ADEN

I adjusted my dress for the hundredth time as I got out of the Uber and stepped onto the busy sidewalk of Soho. Even though I practically grew up in London, my life was fairly monotonous because I could count the number of times I had been to Soho on one hand. This counted as the third time.

I pulled at my dress again and huffed out a breath. It wasn’t the dress bothering me. No, the dress was perfect. It was a satin emerald green midi dress that had a draped cowl neck design and ruched waist with a high slit up my left thigh. It itted my thick igure effortlessly. Again the dress was perfect, it was just me and my goddamned nerves.

I pulled out my phone and texted my mother as I strolled through the open glass doors of Riviera Steakhouse.

Aden: I’m here…

My phone pings seconds later.

Mom: Great! I’m coming to get you.

I lingered near the reception area and I already felt out of place as I watched the rich and glamorous couples walk in, dressed to the nines.

I didn’t have a poor life growing up, but there were days when things were bad. It wasn’t always fancy dinners and comfort. There were days when debt collectors were pounding at our doors, days when there was never enough food. It makes me feel a little uncomfortable standing here now.

I felt like the fourteen-year-old version of myself. Fuck, I hated the bad memories.

“Aden!”

I turned in the direction of my mother’s voice and saw her standing near a glass door, waving me over.

She was dressed in a silky black dress that hugged her delicate igure. Perfect. She was trying to suck up to someone tonight which meant I had to be on my best behaviour and that entailed a list of things she used to make me do in the past whenever we went out for dinners like this.

1. Don’t eat too much.

2. Don’t stare.

3. Don’t talk a lot.

4. Be polite.

5. Smile.

6. Lie and be pretentious.

I wished that I had decided not to come. Wallowing in my apartment seemed like a better option than being here.

I walked over to my mother and when I reached her, she immediately reached out and adjusted the strap on my shoulder.

“I could have gotten you something newer and on-trend if you had let me,” she said as we walked through the archway leading into the restaurant.

“It’s ine,” I said.

I followed her as she led me deeper into the pit. It felt like a pit illed with snakes made out of gold, watching you like you didn’t belong. The uneasiness slowly made its way into my body.

“There he is,” my mother said, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Now, Aden, please don’t make a scene. I know I have a lot to explain…” My mother’s voice disappeared in the background as the table and person we were headed towards came into focus. WHAT THE FUCK?

My world felt like it was being tipped on its axis. I was certain that the room was spinning and that I was fucking seeing things, but there he was.
