Chen gave the gym a once over as she stepped across the mat. Everything had been secured and awaited her use. She adjusted the leotard and took her place at the far corner of the floor exercise. Her eyes closed. She found her mental center and took off in a hard sprint across the mat, diving forward into a round off, followed by a series of back flips.

Her momentum carried her backward onto the adjacent springboard where she flew high over the horse in a triple somersault half-twist combination. As she began to fall, her arms extended and took a hold of the high side of the uneven bar apparatus. Her body carried her into a series of full rotations over the bar and as she slowed down, she began a full routine—complete with releases and aerial stunts, as well as transitions from bar to bar, including one or two rapid exchanges from one to the other and back to the first.

At one point on the high side, she slowed herself into a handstand and held the inverted position. Then, in the blink of an eye, she pushed herself into the air, flipped, and reacquired the bar, using the momentum of gravity to fling herself around the high bar and over the low bar. She came around and transitioned back.

The momentum carried her, and she contorted to build speed. Two full rotations later, she released and flew through the air to a stand-alone high bar.

This apparatus functioned as a mere stepping-stone for the athlete. Using it to gain momentum she hurled herself through the air. Her body shot like an arrow to the last piece of equipment. The still rings stood as the final challenge in her ultimate routine. With all of the momentum she built, the biggest hurdle proved to be keeping the ring apparatus stable.

Her fingers found purchase, and her body fell limp where she hung as dead weight until the swinging stopped. Then, like a professional body builder, she pulled herself up bringing her hands to her waist. Her shoulder muscles bulged as she held the position before exhaling and lowering herself into the iron cross.

Experts in the sport considered the cross to be one of the most challenging positions to hold as it stood as a symbol of sheer strength. Despite the advantage of her cybernetic limbs, Chen’s teeth clenched as she fought both gravity and her fatigued muscles to hold the position.

“I find myself consistently impressed by that routine of yours,” said a voice from the doorway.

Chen turned her head to follow the voice without flinching or breaking her concentration. Tecgui stood there, leaning against a wall, watching her.

Chen inhaled, but this time to get enough air to force her words as she fought to hold the cross for another fifteen seconds.

“Why is that?”

“I’m most amazed that you haven’t killed yourself yet on this medley of equipment. They’re too close to be considered safe, and I’m sure the thought that you could hit one of the pieces or another person never crossed your mind.
